    F Keys

My friend has a laptop and when you hit f1 to target yourself it takes you out of fullscreen mode. I am not sure if the other keys are working for party targeting or not. Is there a setting that i can change to fix this issue. I dont know what kind of computer he has at the moment but i can try to find out if that is necessary.

that's a laptop thing, there might be special settings to turn that off?

Menu > System > Keybind > Targeting > Target Self > Edit this to F1 from whatever or if anything is set here, but the default is F1.

If it is already F1, then the Laptop is using 3rdparty keyboard key shortcut app which they need to disable or edit shortcut function keys.

Thank you. I did look at that and the game says it is mapped to target self is F1. How do I find out about the 3rd party keyboard app? He is absolutely not computer savvy. If I understand what I am supposed to do, I am pretty sure I can do it.

I'm not sure how exactly, it depends on the Laptop make and model, for example Alienware usually have their own app for the keyboard lighting and shortcut keys (aka Fn, Function keys, and F1-F12), I have one myself the app is Alienware Fusion, it has a section for editing shortcut keys etc.

You could reply with the make and model and I might be able to find out how it uses the F1 through F12.

Also you might want to check if the game is running in "Fullscreen" mode or not, that may affect the use of the keys, I think by default the game is set to "Windowed" mode or "Borderless window", both of those modes might cause issues, I would try Fullscreen and see if F1 still closes it, you can check in: Menu > System config > Display > in this window it lists the 3 screen modes.

One more thing, when you look at the F1 key, is there anything on it besides F1, like a small icon of a screen or sun/moon, something etc, if so what icon does it depict?

To add, sometimes laptops due to their size, have a "smaller" keyboard layout, as in not enough physical keys for all of the normal keyboard functions, and as such the Fn keys might be dual purposed keys.
As in, there may be a dedicated key that must be pressed to toggle between a given Fn key's functions.
So maybe there is a key on the keyboard that needs to be pressed with the Fn key in question to switch to the F1 function and off of the function that is effecting the full screen display of the game.

No matter what mode the game is in it takes me out of the game and into a browser. the other symbol on the F! key is a ? I don't see a button to switch between one function of the F keys and another. the keyboard setup defiantly is odd to me but I'm not used to laptops. there isn't a number pad to the side and no keys for insert, home and page up and down or directional arrow keys below that. They do have some alternate placement for that stuff on the laptop in other places.

Okay so, from looking at this Laptop from HP, the F1 through F12 keys are what you would call shortcut keys that you may have to hold down the Fn key to get the noted function to work.

But the thing is, it is different for each model, by this I mean, it is either turned on or off depending on the model.

The good news is you can swap this feature on or off, but it requires using the BIOS screen, which I'll show you what that is in a moment, but the basic issue here is, that to get normal function of the F1 key to work in a game or application, it seems you need to Hold* down the Fn* key and press F1 while Fn is held down, this is annoying and why it's like this by default has everyone in a bind.

So to put the function of the F1 key back to a normal keyboard mode, you will have to do this: (I copy and Paste from the official HP site which I will link here as well)

Enable or disable fn (function) or action keys mode
Change the action key setting from the BIOS Setup Utility.

Press and hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.

Turn on the computer and immediately press the f10 key repeatedly to open the BIOS Setup Utility.

Press the right or left arrow key to select the System Configuration menu.

Press the up or down arrow key to select Action Keys Mode.

Press the enter key to display the Enabled / Disabled options.

Press the up or down arrow key to select one of the options.

Enabled: Does not require pressing fn to use the actions printed on the function keys.

For example, pressing f8 lowers the sound as printed on the key. Alternately, pressing both the fn + f8 keys minimizes and maximizes a web browser.

Disabled: Requires pressing fn to use the actions printed on the function keys.

For example, pressing f1 opens a help window. Alternately, pressing both the fn + f1 keys puts the computer in Sleep mode as printed on the key.

Press the f10 key to save the selection and restart the computer.

This is for general HP family laptops, for the Envy it should be the same but maybe slightly different.

Hopefully it doesn't seem to complicated, just follow the instructions and you can't go wrong.

I was hoping somebody had the patience to put down the details on this.
One of the reasons that I really hate doing repairs or fixes on laptops.
Every one of them is a uniquely horrific piece of ... bad.
