I remember playing it on the Wii Virtual Console back when I was a kid... I don't remember much from it, but I do remember not enjoying it as much as other games.

I think they should at least go back and change the text even if they cant fix anything else. Perhaps they could salvage his character a little.

Not quite true. FFMQ was released in the USA in 1992, meaning they had already released both FF1 and "FF2" (actually FF4) by that time. FFMQ was specifically designed to be an "intro" to RPGs for people who weren't yet familiar with or into the genre, as a means of attracting a wider playerbase who might then go on to play their other RPG titles.

JP gaming companies did have a lower opinion of Western gamers at the time, though, as the "FF2" they released overseas was an easier version of the one in Japan. You also have things like Nintendo making a completely separate "Super Mario Bros. 2" for release in the USA (actually a game from a completely different series converted) because they felt the actual SMB2 was too difficult for USA gamers. Also noteworthy, though, is that many games typically released first in JP, so JP gamers were more experienced, more into gaming culture, and it's not unreasonable to think they could "handle" harder games as a result, whereas a culture that was effectively a few years behind might not be "ready" for it yet.

So why not go back and revise it for how it was then? The 'lovable pervert' trope is genuinely a fun and interesting trope, and falls in-line with a T-rating. Like I said before, there's more explicit speech in other games and media.
This is a major /whoosh. The person pointed out that "all his dialogue since HW has been the same" - he's been dead since then. He has had no dialogue.

Yes. The irony on that statement wasn't lost on me. -_-" Maybe I should have made that point more clear.

    But my point still stands.

I was more or less suggesting something like this, what this thread suggests.

again, no lol. so before you wonder why i say no. let me explain. first off. there has never been a direct 1:1 translation between japanese and any other language. Even if they didn't water him down for the west, you still wouldn't have gotten it conveyed properly as to what he was before the change. theres just no way to do a direct translation and be accurate enough. Anime is a huge example of this in both the sub and dub department. they lose an aweful lot in translation and it ends up being a bit different. i mean the point of the episode is there but its conveyed a bit differently in other languages. So the only way you will essentially get the experience you want is to understand japanese and play the game in japanese so you get the experience you seek.

Literally anything from any language being translated 1:1 will not make proper sense and requires someone skilled in both languages to present what is being said in a way that both parties will understand.

Proper JP to ENG translations for products exist all over the place. I've seen them. I've read them. I've watched them alongside people who were fluent in both Japanese and English. It's why I prefer subtitled anime because English dubs can never truly encapsulate what you get with subtitled content. There are exceptions to this rule, of course, but the brunt of it is undeniable.

It's not difficult, nor impossible for a skilled linguist to create them. There are fan-made translations of manga and anime that accomplish this, and even much of the game is already translated in this way. Hell, even Japanese dialog pasted into DeepL reads better than what I get in some localized dialog. I don't know if that just means DeepL is that good, or if it's a mark against the localizers, but your overall point falls flat.

Yes, certain things may be lost in translation, but such things are not impossible to account for and are typically dealt with on a case-by-case basis.

Tone, mood, etc. ARE capable of being preserved and translated, which is why I often find myself preferring the direct Japanese to English translations of things. The tone is simpler, it's more palpable, and there's less text in general.

It wouldn't be that difficult for SE to give us a proper translation of things, either. They already do it for FR and GER, so why not English?

While I don't want him to be rewritten to match the Japanese, I think his earlier bits in ARR need some more warmth added to them.

Also, no amount of script-altering can fix that scene where he's apparently hitting on you in Japanese and the WoL looks creeped out. It makes me really quite uncomfortable and I'm glad we don't get more of it.
