I only just got around in 2023 (starting in 2014 with many breaks) to levelling more than my typical 2 jobs per expansion and while there is some overlap, there is enough little nuances to keep things interesting to me. It's way better than my other MMO (Elder Scrolls Online) where every dps character plays almost exaclty same (Buff, Buff, dot, dot, dot, spammable, repeat) and often with cross-class skills that are actually the same.
Content that I choose to do is easy but just challenging enough that I'm engaged, aside from most of the early ARR dungeons and Crystal Tower.
Maybe it depends on being an MMO player then since I'm not that. I got into XIV bc I I like FF.
Realistically, and as much as you or other people may want, sometimes a break just doesn't cut it, especially if it doesn't have that same appeal.
Personally, I do have this issue with quite a few games in my collection and my only resolution was to simply drop the game outright and concede that it wouldn't be any time, if ever that the appeal would be there again.
I would say sentiment aside, I'm much happier for moving on, than clinging to some sunken cost.
i only want to touch on one thing. im not defending the game. the op made it quite clear they aren't getting anything out of the game. if you can take a hiatus and come back and still not want to do anything then its time to move on to another game that will give you what you seek. keeping a active sub on one that bores you to this point just is a bad use of finances all around. not to mention yoshi p himself literally said its ok to take breaks from the game lol. even if said op got friends to play with, i have to question how long till they get bored again. just seems easier to drop the sub and play some other games. come back down the road and see if anything interests them after new content has had a chance to accumulateI feel like the "it's time to move on" argument is silly defensiveness of the game. When the story focus is done with, the glaring issues of the game reveal themselves easily. Let's be honest, unless you make the game your life/job by submitting to the raiding paradigm the combat of the game is pretty bland at this point. As someone into crafting and gathering (and by extension housing) as well as access to social things even I can acknowledge those are bandaids for meh gameplay.
Though for the record I acknolwedge it's a difficult problem maintaining a popular MMO that needs to cater to casuals who aren't good, casual players, hardcore players, etc. and still meet financial goals.
Hi just an update, I took notice of the comments recommending a bigger group of friends and the comments of just moving on. Im going to try the former and if it doesnt work its best I consider the latter.
I joined a new fc yesterday with people who seem nice and actually share other interests with like genshin, destiny and other games... but logging in is still kind of hard. We'll see how it goes.
I also appreciate that this post didnt contain as much hostility as most of the others in these forums, let's try keep it like that.
Thanks for all the advice.
Sounds like the game just isn't for you in the long term. If you like the MSQ then just come around during every expansion release, play the MSQ and bounce. I have a few friends that are like that and there's nothing wrong with that.I have come back after 6 months and I still dont feel like playing anything, especially after doing some roulettes and falling asleep again. Playing other games like destiny 2, souls games and some offline games had made me realize how little this game does with the fun and reward factor in any content...
Roulettes are boring but kind of rewarding thanks to gil and tomes.
Extreme trials are kind of fun but very pointless unless you collect mounts.
Savage and ultimate are very stressing during gameplay with rewards that you might not use for other content (since a lot of content is ilevel locked).
Relic weapon farming CAN be fun and rewarding (eureka and bozja have islands to explore, both have ways to earn gil and bozja has very fun fights that you dont need to study for to do good just quick reactions and maybe a broken set of spells)... But I already did most content from both of these and this expansion's relics are tomes... which are VERY boring and only reward you're getting are the weapons.
Deep dungeons are honestly just not for me since it seems like either a lot of repetition or a lot of going slowly cuz im solo and trying to evade traps and you have to be incredibly lucky to make gil out of them.
Maps are VERY VERY rewarding but mostly boring especially since the same formula has been reused forever.
Island sanctuary even after giving it a fair shot it just felt like a really bad farm sim that just so happens you can have a cute character in.
Crafting is the probably the most rewarding thing in this game economically and socially since people are gonna want you to craft stuff... but its not fun at all.
All these issues that are very personally me were not resolved with just taking a break... all a break did was me forgetting my rotations. Im just not sure how to like this game again like I used to.
Dont take it personally if I call an activity you like boring I just need more stimulus in my brain than the usual person but also not too much like savage... I just want to like this game again and I hope someone that has gone through the same can tell me if something has worked for them.
Good luck with the new FC. I hope it makes a difference for you.Hi just an update, I took notice of the comments recommending a bigger group of friends and the comments of just moving on. Im going to try the former and if it doesnt work its best I consider the latter.

Dont forget about criterion dungeons and the terrible rewards. Alot of people are hoping 6.4 is a good patch because outside of ultimates and extremes the content for EW has been meh.

If this works out for you then IMO it is the best kind of group to have. Most of the long term groups I've been are more of a "gaming circle" rather than a group dedicate to just one game, and they are the people who stick together for years.
Calling maps "very very rewarding" is a bit of a stretch imo. The last few times I organized ophio map parties, we spent hours plugging away at it to get like 300k in raw gil. The actual portals, when they spawned, kicked us out after 2 or 3 rooms. And the rewards I got, even when I crafted them into better items, just sat on the market getting undercut for days. I don't even bother with them anymore. The gameplay loop itself isn't fun and the time to money ratio is abysmal.

You took the words right out my mouth. It's why I end up playing solo. Most people you meet seem to have fake personalitiesTo be fair, meeting people in this game, and actually making friends, really seem to be an impossible task most of the time, if not at all the time, I noticed that even more after my relationship ended and I tried to spend time in the game, FFXIV is very clique-y, just like most MMO's really, and its very hard to have a place in an already made group of friends, same as IRL, I have thought about quitting a lot because I just log in and see most people already busy, or doing content and you eventually shrug and log off because there is literally no one to hang out with
