There exists a hole in the male version too, they just have an under-scale armour covering up.
It was supposedly to help them flex the abs to perform their jumps better. It was designed for jumping not tanking.

Whatever the backward explanation is. Original Kain version cover the belly, FFXIV male version cover the belly, the female doesn't. It's about having something covering the belly, whatever the technicality of that belly piece is. It's not even about replacing it, but having two versions available, since, from what I noticed, a lot of people, like me, find that the belly-hole ruins the glam (it's also to see if it was a concensus or not at all).
