RESTRICT act also know as the TikTok ban adds a ton of broadly worded language that in some people's opinion lead to criminalizing VPNs.
What is the FFXIV community's views on this.

why are you bringing real world drama that has to do with tik tok into this game? also going to point out that vpn's are widely used to by pass country stuff. netflix is a huge example of that where people with vpn's will connect to other countries to watch different programs. in gaming. it might help with latency but still its bypassing your own country and hiding your ip as being from another country.https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-...l/686?s=1&r=15

clearly someone doesn't read lmao. The Restrict act is a nefarious act that allows the government to ban any outside influence of the web. Monitor transactions, deny foreign fund transfers. If you use a VPN and get caught up to a $250k fine and 20 years in prison. Gaming on consoles and PC will be monitored. Basically kiss the 1st amendment goodbyewhy are you bringing real world drama that has to do with tik tok into this game? also going to point out that vpn's are widely used to by pass country stuff. netflix is a huge example of that where people with vpn's will connect to other countries to watch different programs. in gaming. it might help with latency but still its bypassing your own country and hiding your ip as being from another country.

VPN are also widely used by SEA players to purchase and play XIV.why are you bringing real world drama that has to do with tik tok into this game? also going to point out that vpn's are widely used to by pass country stuff. netflix is a huge example of that where people with vpn's will connect to other countries to watch different programs. in gaming. it might help with latency but still its bypassing your own country and hiding your ip as being from another country.
It is kind of a big deal to XIV players.
In an interconnected world so deeply woven like ours, the law in one country as big as the USA have global implications.
For example, the EU's data transparency & protection laws they enacted *technically* had no effect on the social media giant companies because 99% of them are based out of the USA. However, the EU possesses a massive customer base for these companies, so despite having no actual legal contraction to obey that law due to country of residence, they had to fold to keep their clientele and not get blocked in the EU. Or more recently, how Apple, despite not residing in the EU proper, had to cave and create alternative charging methods for their phones in order to satisfy the anti-competition laws the EU recently enacted.
If the RESTRICT act was weaponized to basically blanket ban all VPNs in the USA, most VPN companies would see titanic dips in their revenue from lost customer bases and plenty would be forced to potentially shut their doors. How would SEA players be affected? Well, how can they use a service that no longer exists due to its company going under?
While partially exaggerated, never underestimate how laws in a country as big as the USA will affect services & other countries on a global scale - these prosepctive laws like RESTRICT get scrutinized to heck and back again by people all over the internet and other countries purely because the results of them won't be limited to just the USA, it will affect so many other countries by proxy due to how inter-connected the internet is.

If it shuts down TikTok in the West I'm all for it.
