Strife hairstyle. I need to know.

Short exposition before the question:

Today on Facebook several people are saying they received a mail for the modern aesthetics strife hairstyle. They have 0 idea how they won it, all their screenshot shows is that they won it for participating in an event. The internet is only showing two ways to obtain the hairstyle.

1. Participate in something revolving around the fan festival in 2019
2. Participate in a sightseeing screenshot contest from 2020

My questions is, how did they receive this reward?

It occurs to me they may be a returning player, I don't know if they were or not.

Oh I don't think its a scam..? I mean sure maybe, nobody is asking for anything, that I know of....

Ok apparently it was from a ffxiv screenshot contest via Twitter from SE. People are saying a valentones screenshot contest.

So for the last few years every time they do a contest theyve included the strife hair among the selectable prizes. Whether its a twitter contest, or one here on the forums. Sometimes the judging on these things just takes so long that people forget that they entered.

it has its own mail icon and inbox

I would still be wary of it. Scammers may be capitalising on the fact that people are currently hoping to hear that they've won that item from a genuine contest so they'll trust the scam email more readily.

there were plenty more contests that allowed winning the hair (2-4 per year on twitter alone)

I actually received mine yesterday in the mail.

I participated in the recent screenshots contest for Valentine's Day and I guess I won (among other people, there were multiple winners). They didn't announce it anywhere thought, which is strange.

Anyway, if you want the hairstyle, watch out for those contests ; sometimes, you can choose the hairstyle as your price if you win.
