I think this is b/c they don't celebrate Daylight Savings Time over there.They seem to have made it a policy to take the servers down and start patching at about 6:00 AM Japan time. I'm guessing this is because, if they have a problem and the patching process takes a long time, it ends up running through the day rather than overnight. People will be more awake and alert, and there will be other staff there to assist them if necessary. Also, the whole staff is there when the servers come back online, so they can respond more quickly to any critical errors or bugs that pop up once the patch is live.
I'm in the eastern U.S., so while the patch times are kind of inconvenient, it's worse for those of you in the U.K. It would be nice for us if they staggered patch times, but I understand why they do it when they do.
