Sometimes I think part of the reason there is a lack of representation is because developers and media producers are afraid of doing it wrong. Nobody cares how the white straight character is used. Nobody cares if they get murdered or put into some awful situation. Nobody cares if the white straight person is the big bad villain all along. And so because nobody cares, white straight people are often over used because it's safe. If we make the character gay, asian, black or anything else, then they need to do more research to make sure they are represented correctly. For example, if someone needs to be shot and killed in this setting, let's make it a white straight person. Cause if the character were instead gay or black, then people would read to much into it and think the show was trying to portray some false narrative instead. Sometimes lacking representation is a lot safer for producers than to accidently misrepresent in an effort to represent. Nobody sits there and goes, "They did it wrong but at least they tried". No. Doing it wrong gets you called racist, homophobic, transphobic, ect ect. Then they get the held accountable side of things that they should have just did it right the first time. So to avoid that whole problem, they just make it a white straight guy instead because virtually nobody cares what happens to them. If people didn't let how the characters used in the story impact them so much, we might see more representation. But at the risk of being called racist, homophobic ect, they play it safe and keep them out or used very sparingly and with extra caution and care. So this probably does lead to more tokenism in stories because they are trying extra hard to make sure they do it right.
