You're not going to need it for the next raid release (unless there's an Ultimate coming). New crafted gear will be released with a higher ilvl. And having it equipped is just nerfing the difficulty of everything around you at the same time there are raiders complaining that things are getting too easy.

Casual players have to wait to get their shinies. Hardcore players have to wait to get theirs. Sounds like everyone being treated the same.
I have only a surface-level, spectator's understanding of savage/ultimate content, but aren't the margins between success and failure sometimes razor-thin? At least, the random highlight videos or whatever that I come across seem to have an inordinate amount of run-saving healer LB3s or last-second kills before enrage timer fills. I'll grant you that of course, there's a spectacle bias (I guess you could call it?) where only these "clutch" moments end up being recorded and shared, but regardless... Seems as if, if we're talking about gameplay purposes, raiders have a larger reason for wanting/needing the tip-top gear.

My question stands, though, didn't really get answered... Other than FOMO/envy, why do (OTHER, myself very much included) casual players need this apex gear? Or is that basically what it boils down to, just being upset stuff exists that one can't have?

I mean hell, look through my meager post history, and just today I said something similar in a thread about pvp rewards... I don't care if people have shiny things I don't, they engaged with the content. It's ridiculous to me how much everyone in this game seems to hate exclusivity, except/unless they are the ones with the exclusive, and meanwhile I'm just like "bro who cares if the person has a virtual spear that's shinier/has more particle effects than mine"
