This is pretty much me every time a character death happens in FF XIV.That said, I thought his death (much like Haurchefant's imo) was sudden, unimpactful, and anticlimactic. Unlike Haurchefant, though, his death was handled in such a way that I was honestly surprised he was actually dead. Up until the moment The Aitiascope both reminded me that he'd ever existed in the first place and that he was definitely actually dead, I wouldn't have been surprised if he had ended up turning up alive at some point. But here we are!
I just can't force myself to care.
Fr tho. Granted, for me, I think that's mostly about the execution (lol). If, in either case, there had been a more natural build-up to their deaths, it might have landed better? Instead, the writers were just kind of doing nothing with Haurchefant or Papalymo -- and then bam, they're dead, and I'm supposed to care.
Of course, I found it difficult to care about any of the characters, really, until ShB. There were moments in SB where I liked something a Scion would do, but they were mostly just... around. Being kinda boring. Less boring than in ARR and HW, but still. And I wouldn't say they necessarily got more interesting in ShB, but I found them more emotionally compelling. So if I were ever to be impacted by one of their deaths, it would probably be now, but 6.0 sure jumped the shark on that one lol.
His death and how they treated his sacrifiy in the storyline felt like they just wanted get rid of him, in my opinion.
For me it's the opposite to what you said. xD
Always when they talk or think about a dead NPC I often get a liiiittle bit angry that Papalymo didn't get mentioned again and again. How much they abondon this character completely ruined to whole Moenbryda moment in EW for me. It was a nice cutszene but I couldn't enjoy it because my bad feelings about how they treated Papalymo have grown very strong. :')
Why is Moenbryda more important? Is she a 1.0 starter NPC companion? Is her sacrifiy more worth than Papalymos, who did nearly the same thing, that the twins grandfather did to save Eorzea? And Papalymo did it better, because he acted 'before' something really bad can happen.
But long story short..., it is now how it is. In the end they can't make everyone happy. And that it ruins some things for me, is just a personal thing, because he was my favourite scion. I brought him back to life somehow, with making an alt that nearly looks like him. So also other players sometimes get reminded that he was there, when I am online on that alt! Making a face like: ò.ó

Same. Perhaps I'd care a bit more if the characters killed off weren't irrelevant side characters. I don't find the death of that satrap dude we meet 5 minutes ago to be compelling. There hasn't been a good protagonist death since Heavensward.
I don't even consider her a main character. She's only going to be with us until the story moves away from the Void. I honestly don't see how some people think she's gonna be permanently around, save for the odd MSQ here and there.
Besides that....I have no problem with Zero. I did feel her changing over the course of the patches was too fast, but I'm overall happy with her and I'm looking forward to finding out more about her.![]()
The same Heavensward that undid a bunch of consequences from the end of ARR?
She's a bit bland, but she won't be a major character in the long term. I do like her design though.
She is the only person that can defeat Golbez in the thirteenth right? by turning him into a crystal. So yeah..... they needed a new character for that purpose.
Up until 4.0, I would say yes. They were killing characters left and right for very little reason beside a short-burst impact with very actual narrative or story reason. Haurchefant's death formula was so typical and his death scene was so bad that's my reaction during his scene was just "really? that's just stupid". I bet the story writer looked at Moraeby's death and was like "ohhh look like people like it, so let's do it again!"
IMO from 4.0 onward the writing has become a lot more "mature", ironically because they stop using these death as fake inflation for a character's worth, instead actually write something substantial to make me care about them.
