But isnt that every playable character in every rpg game ever?Yeah but if you think about it. Our character is the biggest Mary Sue in the entire game. Is easily well liked by almost everyone, can master every job, their FFsoul belongs to a mysterious but powerful character, is besties with 2 main villains, can summon allies whenever they please and theyre lives are considered to have the most painful backstory because of all they go through even though your average Ala Mhigan has endured worse.
Lets face it, our character is the worst written one out of the entire cast. I love my guy but hate how theyre treated as being extremely speshul.
Not really, no? it's certainly far more of a thing in recent times, like the past 10 years or so, but let's take the Hero from DQ VIII as an example, nicknamed "Eight" for convenience, Eight is not a Chosen One, he is never stated to be particularly skilled at anything besides fighting, and not even all forms of combat, Jessica is explicitly far more powerful as a spellcaster for example, or even be the most beloved character by everyone in the party, he does share a special connection with Princess Medea and she is his love interest, but they are also childhood friends so that's properly contextualized, he is simply a kind-hearted individual who has a strong loyalty to King Trode due to Trode arranging for him to be taken care of when he was found lost in the woods.
Now compare to the FFXIV's WoL, per the narrative, you are an unstoppable beast in combat, you are the Chosen One of:
- Hydaelyn.
- A-Towa-Cant, so special in fact that you get to break a lore limitation.
- The Eye of Nidhogg, when there was already a Chosen One for it around, in fact.
- Shatotto.
- Every single Soul Crystal that seem to react extremely strongly to your presence.
This is nothing to say that you are the reincarnation of a member of the Convocation of the Fourteen, who was also one of Emet-Selch's closest friends, and Venat's direct successor, you are also the most skilled Carpenter/Blacksmith/Armorer/Goldsmith/Leatherworker/Waver/Alchemist/Culinarian that the respective guilds have ever seen, and you are barred from the top spot in those roles only by a very tiny handful of characters like Gerolt, Godbert, and Julyan, the latter two of which are outright gag characters, and the former might as well be one.
I may have overindulged, but I was attempting to illustrate the point of the stark difference between two Square Enix main characters.
They killed him and Yda cause they didn't fit the narrative tbh., no place anymore for the comedic duo in the story after 1.0. That's why they killed him and butchered Yda.
Neither of them were actually there if you think about it. Both were pretty forgettable, and barely had any personality.
Is Zero the most unlikeable main character in this game?
Not by a long shot. I really like her character arc and style. Hope she stays for 7.0+. Then again, I like Y'shtola too... heck if I had to pick one character who I disliked it would be Tataru so take that as you will.
Feel the same way. In fact I think Pala went to pave the way for Yda's exist. The scion went from a small support faction to an all important world power, and its member are shown to have an equal sitting as the leaders in discussing state matter. Maybe they felt the stereotype dumb blonde can't be a good fit anymore.
But I missed both of them. The current scion are all serious type, and most good set of characters need a one or two simple joker and muscle head to keep the balance. Also a simple muscle head like Yda can be a valuable outlet for extra exposition when the writer feels they need to explain something in more detail. All the current scion are also too much in synch which may be what make them boring to some, but that's why it helps to have a character in the group that may not be on the same wave length with the rest all the time.
Looking at the current pool of whom may become new Scion in the feature, they're still all serious characters (like Zero or Fordola). Regardless of what people may think about Yda as a character, her old "archetype" is something the Scion current composition is badly missing.

Sad :c
He was my favourite scion.
Yet I can't say much about Zero. But atm she feels not very interesting to me. I also disliked Zenos a lot. And so I also dislike it when this char gets mentioned by Zero again and again.
Maybe I like Zero more later, but atm MSQ feels really boring to me, thb. It's the first time that I feel like this. But maybe it's not because the story is bad. Maybe it's just because the first big story arc is over and it takes time to build up the new one. : )
All this talk of Papalymo just reminds me how much he didn't work for me lol. I understand it was supposed to be funny, and more seriously that he was very protective of her, but I often felt he was too unkind to Yda/Lyse.
Different strokes for different folks, but I was low-key an itty bitty tiny bit relieved when he was killed, and I always forget about him entirely until the game randomly reminds me, or moments like these when someone else brings him up.
That said, I thought his death (much like Haurchefant's imo) was sudden, unimpactful, and anticlimactic. Unlike Haurchefant, though, his death was handled in such a way that I was honestly surprised he was actually dead. Up until the moment The Aitiascope both reminded me that he'd ever existed in the first place and that he was definitely actually dead, I wouldn't have been surprised if he had ended up turning up alive at some point. But here we are!
