You do know you can just block those people or switch your chat log to a different one that doesn't show party talk, right?

I know it happens, and I have seen it firsthand. There's probably very little I haven't seen after spending a decade in this game. Still, I don't consider it to be the norm.
It's called dissonance.
When your experiences and the experiences of several people around you go against what someone claims to be happening so grossly and so consistently, then it makes it hard to believe. So people ask for proof. Just so that they can see that it is indeed happening and be able to change their own worldview. This, in turn, could even help people sympathize more with OP.
It's not a legal thing. It's more of a psychology thing.
My credentials: None, I just like psychology documentaries :^) so all my knowledge is second-hand. I only passingly know this specific thing from Human Behaviour lectures in university, but I only had one semester of it.
Fun fact, this is what cults go through when the end of the world they prophesised doesn't happen x)
Either they break their worldview and grow into the mindset everyone else outside the cult had, or double down on it and think their prayers and rituals prevented the apocalypse.

[QUOTE=Ryugami;6213190]What is it with people in Alliances? How many times am I gonna have to put up with cringe people joking about domestic violence or sexual abuse in alliance chat and not get punished for it??? Please, can we have a way to mute these people, even if it is client side?[/QUOTE
Go to chat options, Disable Alliance and General chat.
Problem solved.

Typically I just ignore chatter in the alliance chat because I tend to be really focused on the controls (because I suck).
If it really bothers you, I suggest to just report the incident and hope for the best.

Wow. I guess I'll count myself lucky that the worst I get is tanks trolling or fighting over aggro in Crystal Tower, rotating the boss every which way and getting people killed. Although, some of those cases can also be new tanks who've never done an Alliance Raid before and don't understand what they're doing.

It's called dehumanizing people you don't like. It's easier to find the bad guy and "Punch a _____." rather than see why X is happening by looking at a situation objectively, lol. You'll find toxic behavior anywhere. NA has our own issues which are obvious. I've seen it in OCE and EU as well (particularly towards NA). I haven't personally been to JP but hear stories about how they immediately remove anyone who isn't a native to JP from groups because they dont want to deal with anyone else. Dunno why people try to make it a western only problem when every DC (and frankly every country in the world) has some toxic minority inhabiting it.

If it's happening as often as you say it is and you never really take place in the chat yourself...just hide the chat. Problem solved.

It's a sad non solution but realistically, that's your best bet. You could use the /blist option to hide the people in question's chat but i'm not 100% sure it will work if they are in your pt/alliance.
