-Criterion was a few new (or new in this form) systems tried out for the first time, and the story was interesting. The rewards were a bit lacking, but standard fare for a lot of side-content (glam gear and some random extras like minions or mounts)

-The Relic is a result of the last FOUR OF THEM having people complain about every single step. I think it's less laziness and more exasperation and trying this out to see if people prefer it. This is basically the HW Relic just without the middle-man. Many of those steps you bought the parts with tomes, you just had to then do something like combine the parts or whatnot, so it made it seem more interesting and less "generic tome buying generic item".

-Orthos adds a new aesthetic and several new pommanders that can change how you do content, such as how Storms works if you think you can round up large groups and use it before dying, the Slow spell one, and the Demi-clones don't work like the HoH Summons did, instead of being one big wide area attack, they're minions that follow and support you on the floor. The boss encounters are also more like "regular" boss fights in the game in terms of mechanics, rather than PotD's "regular enemy with more health" or HoH's "we'll add a mechanic or two from SB". It also allows leveling from 81-90 outside of Bozja, and has a lot of collectable rewards. The bosses are also less slogs while the regular enemies have more health vs the player damage output for the first few floors, normalizing around 30ish. Will change up a bit how one solos them. Not to mention the risk of big pulls due to the way the telegraphs are pretty darn deadly, like the Grenade explosions or the 21-30 floor Dragon Swinge attack. From 10,000 feet, any DD is going to appear more or less the same, but Orthos is different enough to be interesting and NOT just a carbon copy of HoH. I don't think it was lazy at all.

-I don't like IS. But I don't think it was lazy, per se. Again, a lot of new systems. It's just not my type of content playing middle-manager to a cheap labor sweatshop. With the base in the game, they can add little things over time like glamour gear or mounts/minions and it be its self-contained little thing on the side. I'm miffed because I feel it robbed me of something I really like (Exploration Content like Eureka/Bozja), but for what it is, it's not terrible.

-MSQ has used Trials before. ARR did it quite a few times, including the Igly fight and most of the Primals. Not the side ones like Mog, but Shiva and I think Odin were both MSQ, as were the original trio and Leviathan. HW had Niddy in 3.3, was it? SB had Tsuyu, and ShB had WoL. While HW, SB, and ShB deviated from this with a lot of their "sets" of Trials (Warring Triad, Four Lords, and WEAPONS and also Memoria on the side), EW doing an ARR is hardly unprecedented, and every past expansion has had at least one Trial that was a major story event in a patch. It's just not been more than one since ARR. I do feel that some of the story has been a bit thin, but I also think it's kind of a "holding pattern" until 6.4/6.5 which will set up 7.0.

Unfortunately, that's kinda made the expansion feel like a "holding pattern" as well. Which...may end up amazing if 7.0 is mind blowing and amazing, or...may feel less so if it's...not.

I'm here for it either way, but I do understand the complaints.

Apparently someone showing emotion publicly is shameful.. I swear with these people. It didn’t make me think damn we must protect it etc he is just clearly passionate about what he does and this is a man who for the most part has been consistent with his schedule for years so to him it felt like a betrayal of his portrayed visage. I’d rather have Yoshi P cry on stream then see Kitase and Nomura try and tell me it would be impossible to do XYZ in regards to 7 remake with a straight face haha

Honestly, I don't mind it - But to try and make a connection between the two is a bit of a pointless stunt, then again, I hardly expect much better.

People defend something because they still enjoy it even with its many flaws, just as some people continue to critique the game because it just doesn't quite scratch their itch, or for whatever reason - But some people seem to be so obsessive in trying to construe these as something else.

Quite a bit to digest in this thread.

Yoshi-P is a good man, and he definitely cares about the game; but he's also an employee of a company and part of their board. That has to come with the expectation that he's going to be double-talking sometimes. I don't think this necessarily comes from a place of malice, but I also think it's naive to think he's always putting the players best interest at heart.

It's very wild to read some of the whiplash from folks. I think it's disingenuous to assume anyone who either defends of criticizes the game is doing it from a place of bad faith. Though I do understand the knee-jerk to do so, as there are absolutely folks who are die-hard bad actors from both ends of the spectrum that can go unnamed. Personally, I've become a lot more vocal in my criticism of the game during this expansion's patch cycles. I've played FFXIV for a long time, and I love so much about the same; but this expansion's patch cycle has seemed comparatively boring and less able to hold my attention. I don't want to be on this game every waking hour of every day, but I do want to feel like there's something for me to do and look forward to doing when I log in. Right now, for me, that's really only the Loporrit tribe. Frankly, if I didn't have my House and wasn't doing some of the old Ultimates with friends I'd have unsubbed.

I understand that content like Bozja and Eureka, specifically, is not for everyone. I hated Pagos with my whole heart and still do to this day when I help friends out with them. And I understand that content like Bozja and Eureka is particularly hard to future proof for people who want to "collect" relic weapons (/armor) and their shinies after the content is less relevant. But for the time at which it comes out it is fun and engaging, to me. Unfortunately due to the nature of how the game is structured there's a plethora of lower level stuff to do, but not a lot of current level things to do. I can only clear Savage so many times before I don't want to do it anymore. In my opinion, stuff like Eureka and Bozja filled out that nice midcore gap of being able to jump into an instance, do a little grinding, have some fun doing FATEs, an instance, whatever; and then hop out. But in this expansion there's really not a lot. The Deep Dungeon/Orthos is fine -- there's really only so many ways you can iterate upon the system we have, and I think this one is neat, but saving it until the tail end of the patch for 3.5 made it feel somewhat empty. I very much enjoyed Variant Dungeons and Criterion, but the reward structure was so lacking and anemic that it provides no incentive to really do much other than getting the clear and never touching it. Island Sanctuary was interesting but now that I'm maxed out I set my agenda for the week and don't touch it until the day before it resets to collect everything and set the agenda again.

I don't think it's fair for some folks to immediately fire back with quotes like "just go do Coils synced", "go do TOP", or "go grind out the Accursed Hoarde achievement" when people bring up the issues that they have because it's not helpful, and it's not really addressing most of the issues that are genuinely being raised; same with "just take a break" I don't think anyone who is legitimately criticizing things in this thread is saying they want to be plugged into the game terminally without being able to play or do anything else, they're just lamenting the fact that this expansion has exposed the cracks in the game's content ecosystem; and just flippantly replying that is disingenuous.

I love this game -- FFXIV is one of my favorite games, and definitely my favorite Final Fantasy; but this expansion's patch cycle has left me a little disillusioned, and I'm very much hoping that whatever the current issues are now, whatever the cause of them is, will be ironed out in 7.0. Maybe that's copium, but I think when you're disappointed in something it's important to be honest in your critiques; and if the community for this game hadn't been as vocal in its critiques as it was, we wouldn't have made it out of 1.0 (not that I think the situations are directly analogous)

The bad thing about taking a good long break like I want, I'm talking about not coming back till like 2 months before 7.0 drops is I'd lose my house & God knows how hard those are to get.

I ain't paying a sub just to keep a house on a game so I can log in once a month cause I'm taking a break.

If your burnt out then eventually you'll burn yourself out so bad to where u don't care bout losing the house, but it is something to consider.
