I don't really know how many people you're interacting with, but there are people on reddit and in different FF14 discords that genuinely like it.

And there are plenty that consider this step very lazy. Though there has to be a ton of people who enjoy it ande as a company you would want to rake in the most profit with the least amount of work. If there are plenty of people ready to throw money at a brand then it would be silly for a company not to prioritize them over the "vocal minority". Sure, it can erode what made the game fun to many who joined when the game came out but you know what they say: out with the old, in with the new! Foresight is just a liability!~

My point isn't necessarily that I like things how they are. I'm not defending it.

I'm just pointing out that we likely have no accurate idea what percentage of the playerbase enjoys it, dislikes it or doesn't care, and we really shouldn't pretend otherwise either.

Personally, I don't care either way. It's SE's golden goose so they can do whatever they want. I would rather them have a clear direction they are going with the game over listening to the playerbase's opinions. Though considering it's SE, I'm waiting with bated breath to see if they have such a big brained idea it would chase me away. I'm betting on either NFT shenanigans or ring 0 rootkit troubles. Any takers?
