I'm one of those dreaded 'sub for a month, play the content, and stop subbing for 5 months' players. do you know WHY I stop subbing? Because I have my fun, and move on when I STOP HAVING FUN. That's why I find these "I QUIT" (no they haven't) posts so silly. If you're so desperate to be rid of the game, just STOP PLAYING. Why on earth would I pay for something for months while I despise it? Why would YOU?
I suppose it depends on what you consider quitting but either way that's a lot of assumptions you make and treating the conclusions you came to as facts.

For me, someone quit when they are done with a game mentally. That doesn't mean that that they have to uninstall it in a rage or spend x years without touching it or even 3 days of sub remaining contests it.
And there are several reasons why someone might still log in:
1) maybe they're FC leader and want to know their FC in good hands instead of just suddenly never logging in again and dumping it on someone randomly. But things like the person over currently being busy or internal discussions about to go forward can delay that so they'll take care of it for a bit longer
2) maybe they have a static and don't want them to have to look for a replacement all of the sudden, especially late into the tier like right now, so they'll stay to finish the remaining reclears and give time to find a suitable replacement
3) maybe they had a 3months/ 6 months sub and what's done is done, can't write SE an email saying "please delete all the remaining game time or someone on the forum will say didn't ACKSHUALLY quit"
4) maybe they are part of a project they want to finish before quitting, e.g. redesigning the FC house

You could in theory say "Well, just don't do any of these!" but then again, why should someone go about things in a very specific way that goes against their own ethos? The personal decision to get everything in order doesn't take away from the decision to quit something.

In my case, 2 and 3 apply.
I'm still logging in once per week to do one of the last p8s reclears with my static and obviously my sub is still running simply because I already paid for a service in advance that exceeds the time I actually want to use said service. Nothing to be done about, it doesn't bother me nor does it change anything about my decision.
But I've quit. I've emptied my retainers, gave people tenant rights to plunder my house to their heart's content, demolished my apartment and FC room, I'll dump my gil into the FC chest once I vendored the remaining furniture. It's not taking a break like I did during ARR, HW and SB, I know that better than a stranger on the forum. I simply lost all interest in it and I'm just "doing my duty" a few more times because I like the people in my static and dislike suddenly poofing, moreso since my static is for people with anxiety and that struggle to connect with others ingame, so I'd rather give them the option to finish the tier and then look for someone else in peace for the next tier.
And yes, it was a good decision. I know that without having to spend years absent from a game. I still occasionally check the forum when on a train etc. and some people here are interesting to have discussions with but I'll not weep in sorrow when I can't do that anymore fairly soon.
