The literal universe ending omni threat is identified with less than total destruction for one city and its immediate environs with a couple of other, small, isolated regions suffering this same fate... I think part of that is where the story suffers from being part of an MMO expansion. They pretty much had to limit things to the new zones. Yeah, some games like WoW have done world-spanning events in the past, but those don't always go over well. I know it rather annoying trying to go about your business before WotLK with zombies constantly spawning and either having to worry about fighting them off or just getting creamed by them if you were on a lowbie alt. XIV could possibly look at phasing more if they wanted to have something more world-spanning but not negatively affect non-expansion players. We know they had to have done something along those lines because we weren't split up when the sky turned red in Thavnair so those at that point saw a red sky and others were before that or past it and didn't.
