After collecting tomes and upgrading a weapon I realized a new reason to not like the step, I can't work on anymore relics since I need tome items for crafting and the relic has caused the tome items price on the MB to inflate heavily.

More like crafters resetting the market before patch and now profiting on what they bought during reset and what they crafted. And not like tomes are hard to come by plus right now is the last call for the crafted combat gear as 6.4 will reset it.
I would agree but with no one knowing that we were getting a second tome step and with everyone burning their tomes on their relics it seems like that is the cause of the almost 3x inflation on some of the materials. I don't disagree that they are easy to come by, however now I am having to choose to spend them on crafting mats instead of upgrading my relic which I am not a fan of.
You also can't work on more then one relic at a time which seems counterintuitive to "We have noticed people like getting multiple relics" logic. I would have simply put in a quest for an alternative route to get the complimentary chondrite. You can spend poetics or go run each part of let's say Mhach as an example. I would have liked an option to not use my tomestones and have a means to progress this step separately from the first.
