While I do like not being locked into a separate field area where I can't queue for anything else, a la Eureka or Bozja, in order to grind out my relic stuff, this does feel... not great.

As others have already pointed out, Eureka Orthos released today. The Variant/Criterion dungeons are still very new. Why not try to funnel people into that content?

Heck, why not try to funnel them into ANY specific content to try to keep player engagement up? Wasn't that part of the point of the grind steps on older relics, to keep people running older content so that the queues wouldn't die and newer players could actually get through it later, since people would always ostensibly be working on a relic at some point?

My long-term goal is to have every relic weapon for every class in the game (maybe minus the final step of the SB ones that require BA runs in order to complete). This is what I usually work on in "down-time" between new content patches. At this point, the finish line is somewhat in sight, so to have this that can just be completed very easily is kind of... disheartening? It will give me less reason to keep playing on my main.

Because they flubbed Variant/Criterion so badly neither would actually work.

Variant is comically simple to the point it can be effortlessly soloed. That isn't to say it's bad content per se because it isn't. The whole exploration aspect worked, albeit with very minimal longevity. Par for the course with this game, evidently. The issue is it means players aren't queuing into Duty Finder necessarily, which is what they want for the relic. Criterion, on the the other hand, is way overtuned to be a relic step. Instead of the more Extreme difficulty they originally announced, they made it equivalent to low tier Savage. This meant it was dead content for the overwhelming majority of players who, while may want something with some teeth to it, aren't looking for a Savage fight. They certainly wouldn't lock a relic step behind it. Not to mention, unless Criterion could be unsynced at a later point in time, it'd require some heavy nerfing to not lock out players as the expansion(s) went on.

Basically, their very shortsighted planning made both a non-option they can only really rectify in the next iteration.

Nope. Still the best MMO. Still better than WoW, and 100% of critics agree. People say there’s not much to do in this patch, and you know what? That’s a good thing. You see, it gives us time to play other games. Just think: we pay $13 a month to play all the other games that we want, all while being able to AFK and socialize with our friends in FFXIV. Isn’t that exciting? Besides, there’s so much to do. Old content like Crystal Tower never gets obsolete, unlike WoW where they deleted half the game or something. Oh, and did I mention that WoW is, like, run by Blizzard? Come on, we have it so good here. And if you don’t want to play, then don’t play. Take a break and come back. Or don’t come back, because this game might not be for you. It’s a single-player JRPG first and an MMO second. Myself, I love re-watching cutscenes and have done New Game+ twice already. Just because you’re not having fun doesn’t mean FFXIV is a bad game. There are millions of people who like the game as-is. In fact, 27 million people came to FFXIV to enjoy the game as-is. They don’t want us like being like WoW. If you like their game, then go play that instead. The rest of us are fine.

This is only the second stage though right? Aren’t there usually 4 or 5 steps to a relic weapon? Maybe the later steps will be more grindy for those that want it. Working, so I haven’t had a chance to get on and do the quests yet.

there will probably be two more steps 6.45 for to be on par with the current EX trial and 6.55-8 to be on par with final savage tier but i doubt they will do anything different for last two steps if the first two are like this.

People complained about ARR relic grind, HW light farms, Eureka, Bozja/Zadnor, and the alternative content being forced to do what was optimal to earn memories faster. I suppose the devs feel doing the entire hildibrand series through endwalker is grind enough. I only did a few relics in ShB because honestly I didn’t like the way most of them looked, wasn’t into the whole militia look or judge stuff. I did like the way it was implemented though (fates, DR, special actions/buffs). Bozja was also the deep dungeon alternative for leveling, this time we got the deep dungeon instead.

It could be the number of jobs and weapons and they feel people will get burned out grinding them. I personally don’t collect all the relics, I only do my favorite jobs, but some people do all of them. Whatever their reasons are, we get another round of tomes, and it will most likely be this way all of endwalker. People asked for “not being locked to one type of content and forced to do something they don’t like” and now they can be free and use tomes instead. I can see why this happened.

i couldve had fun with new fates and Notorious monsters/ Critical engagments but nooo just continuously farm roulettes for instances below max level anyways.

Or just hunt trains, but you were going to do those anyways

Besides CLL locking you out of progression which I think we can all agree in hindsight was poor design what is a single justification for not doing a new relic like the resistance relics

You can farm them in the new x zone (for EW it could be variant or allagen HOH) or you could farm x old content, it’s not like they couldn’t put poetics steps in between each step to break it up so you do a bit of everything

The removal of field content already teaks of laziness, couldn’t they have at least put in 1% of the effort they did in SB
