Most likely you aren't even using 80% of what's stored on your retainers. Stop hoarding stuff you don't need and save some cash every month. If you want to keep hoarding, make alts.I pay for this Game and spend a lot time to get special Gear, Weapons and what not. Just to throw them away?
My Stuff is organised, alone for Crafting Materials + Food I need 3 Retainers. I have only Material for Items I craft and sell + new Material for Rinascita and Indagator's Items.
I sell Furniture / House Deco and that needs tons of Space cause those Items needs tons of different Materials / Resources to craft them.
Then I have House Deko from all those Events + Coffers from Events and Glamour Items, special Dyes, Scrolls for Exp Bonus and a Handful other Items, that is a 4th Retainer.
The 5th Retainer is full with Retainer Restock Items like 40 Summer Sandals, 20-30 Sea Breeze Summer Pareo and so on.
3 Retainers with full Gear Sets / Tower of Babil, Troja, Eden and so on. 1 Retainer with Weapons, Jewelry and 1 Retainer with Materia + Items that I still need. The last Retainer is empty right now.
This Game has to many Materials, to many Gear / Glamour and to less Space to Store.

Spot on. If a player looks carefully at what they are holding, they'll probably realize they can dump a lot of it. Gear you might want to use to glamour... put in the glamour dresser. Those tokens for completing trials, if already have what need from them (like the mount), dump any from a previous expansion without a second thought. Do you really need to hold on to the Valentione's Chocolate from 2015? Probably not.
Holding onto most materia is a waste. In most (not all) cases, they plummet in value, especially as we move on from the expansion.
Use the MB to hold your stuff. In other words, sell what you have that aren't using on a weekly basis. In many cases, you can reap rewards now and then it'll be on the MB later. It is quite possible that when you deposit stuff on the MB and then take it back out later (read: sell now, buy later) you might make some gil. Or, maybe you lose a little gil. Either way, it frees up space.
