Why is this even still a thing? It's supposed to be a "comeback mechanic," but it doesn't work anywhere near the way SE seems to have intended for it to. It is instead an annoyance that only prolongs the game needlessly.

It’s a mechanic taken from overwatch and similar games. The problem imo is that the respawn is too close and you sometimes get some real nasty comebacks because they killed your team one by one after swarming them nonstop.
Increasing the delay to respawn may help. But tbh I’m just not a fan of the whole push the cart / capture the flag game mode.
I think Team Fortress did it better overall, but the game is balanced.

Honestly, if your team is unable to kill the enemy trickling down one by one, they kinda deserve to lose (what are they even doing if they can't do that simple act and yet they managed to get that far?).
If the enemy managed to delay a little by throwing one or two bodies until a decisive LB turns the tide, they deserve the prolongation.
