Trial synthesis starts with the quality at 0, no matter what mats are selected when you start it. How do you change this?
Nvm, found another post complaining about this. Fix it SquareEnix!

While it should be doable, it is just math in the end. Let's say you get to 10000 quality with NQ mats and you need 12000 for 100% HQ, just keep adding HQ mats until you get to 2000 starting quality.
Working as intended for better or worse.
As DPS guy said, it's not difficult to find out how much quality HQ materials add at the start. Select your materials, hit Synthesis, record the Quality amount shown then hit Quit before using any actions. You won't lose mats as long as you haven't used any actions.
Subtract that number from the total Quality needed to reach 100%. That will give you the Quality amount you want to aim for while doing Trial Synthesis.
Or better yet, just use the Teamcraft crafting simulator. You can build rotations then play with step Conditions, stats, HQ materials, food and draughts to see how total Quality and Progress are affected as the numbers and Conditions change.
