If you're a culture that has been exploited and oppressed for years, then yeah, you're going to be angry about a company profiting of it without even a minor gesture towards even acknowledging your culture. I feel the same way about make up brands making Lunar New Year ~limited edition~ sets. I have zero issue with the average individual celebrating or having fun with it, same with my cultural clothing, but when a company wants to make money off of you while it also fails epically in providing any recognition of your culture or racial equality within itself, then it sucks. SE doesn't exactly have a good track record with either.

The whole problem I have with this is that the Sami aren't innocent.

Yeah, they got mistreated in the past, but now they're using that fact to bully people into submission when it comes to ANYTHING they can profit from.

As such, this "demand" needs ignored, and they can get bent.

It's always interesting to see how any kind of marginalized minority is instantly branded as rude, offensive and overreacting by uninformed people with no relationship to the topic nor interest in educating themselves. They attached a video to the tweet where they shared this where they said they had contacted SE through the "proper" channels politely in the past and got ignored. They are not standing with pitchforks and torches in front of Yoshi-P's home or anything, they simply ask for people to be respectful. But of course this is way too much to ask, how dare they standing up for themselves in a manner it doesn't cater to priviliged people's comfort.

All of this would be a non-issue if SE would have done the bare minimum of contacting Saami people before claiming their traditional wear which is far more than just "fashion" to them. So please blame SE for being lazy, not Saami for wanting people not to make money off of their culture.

That's right, you specifically don't owe them anything. But you are also not the huge company who used an almost copy of their traditional garb and sold it for a lot of money on a store for a famous MMO. The council is not asking you personally for anything. They are asking a big multimillion dollar company profiting off of something dear to them.

Sami on 2023 are genetically identical to their swedish, norwegian, finnish and russian neighbours. Their language, endangered one because so few speak it and splintered beyond resuscitation especially in east, is what makes them culturally sami in most countries.

I live in country where sami are eating themselves alive, because those who subscribe to language = you're part of the culture: the idea want to change the law so that language is what defines you as member of the cultural community. Those who have been able to trace their lineage to sami anchestry, and so have been able to identify as sami by that anchestry but don't speak the languege anymore are pushing back, as I have understood. I don't really care.

Of course law could not mean anything, but you cannot have indigenous special treatment and perks without law seeing you as indigenous...

I feel like emperor doesn't really have clothes, and this is actually fight for some nebulous special status at areas, which have been archaeologically been proven to been inhabited by other people 400-2000 years before proto-sami came around.
