Yep, Disney showed up at their doorstep and gave them a ton of money so they wouldn’t be offended and they were like yup, this works. And from that point forward if anyone dare reference them in any way they better pay up.

This is a perfect example of actions doing more harm than good. No one should have contacted them, and they should have no reason to protest unless someone was being intentionally disrespectful to them. Which as far as I can see is not happening.

Hopefully it doesn’t go to courts because if it does all Disney succeeded in doing was creating a law suit mill with their misguided woke agenda. Money isn’t even the best thing you can do for cultures, it’s more about being respectful about how they are presented. But I bet the greedy politicians would disagree of course. Even those on the Sami council. Those seem remarkably similar across all cultures and locations.

From the research I did, they'd have trouble bringing a lawsuit. I see "cultural IP" as something being discussed but I don't see any law or agreements Japan or other countries agreed to abide by. For example, Black Panther was sued for some of the attire used in the film, due to that attire being illegal to use without permission in that country. However, there are no laws binding the US or other countries that they are bound to through any international agreements, so I don't think that lawsuit prevailed.

It's probably why they went to twitter instead of a court.

The ignorant people here are those blindly supporting this council. This has nothing to do with respecting the culture or historical oppression. They are looking for money. It's highly evident that is all they actually want. A culture is not suddenly respected because a council got a payday. If anything the initial exposure showed some people the Sami culture in one form for the first time, and the outfit itself is respectful. The second exposure is this council looking for a money grab, whereas they had already gotten one from Disney. The second exposure is a bad look here.

Imagine if France, China, England/UK, India, Mongolia, all of Scandinavia, Russia, Italy, various tribes, and even the United States said to stop appropriating anything related to themselves, whether it be outfits, architecture, names, classes/jobs, foodstuffs, or whatever.

France, UK, Scandinavia, Russia can't do it because we're ineligible for cultural appropriation.

Whatever happened to cultural APPRECIATION? Friends FC mate in Finland said none of the Sami he knows give a crap.

I draw your attention to the portion of the article that states they have an agreement with Disney Animation. THAT changes everything.

You can't seel anything to Disney like that for what is world heritage stay world heritage... and it would be just bad for any company who think they can claim it for their own, as long as there is no disrespectfull goin with the attire that in one way or another would demain whichever culture, then there is no culture really that has the rights on how to dress.

It is not like you are buying a badge that say Gucci or Levi's or Chanel which is printed on some clothing/parfumes and whatever else.

Hello forum people, Im a long time player but i had to make an account just to voice my opinion on this.

I have not read every post in this thread but let me just say straight away that i am of the sami people, and when i saw square adding the Far Northern outfit last year i was thinking "This looks alot like the sami outfit, that is awesome, i like it".

Today when i read about this.... drivel comming from the saami council i just face palmed. Its just so stupid its not even worth paying attention to and i hope square gives them the middle finger.
Every sami that i know that actually do proper traditional work really would not give a flying eff about this outfit. These people are just out to be a pain in the ass and pretend they are promoting the sami culture when in reality they just anoher bunch of office rats that dont know the real world outside the office walls of theirs. Its people like these that give the sami people as a whole a bad rep.

The fact that they basically said "we are open to negotiations" just means they hoping for some form of money handouts from square. Just... no.

it's sadly expected, but unfortunate that a number here cannot see past politics, agendas, and History. to see with eyes unclouded the reality which anyone can read from the article. as being clearly for Money only.

Many situations show proof of being Actually harmful to people, and set harmful precedence.[i don't have to mention H.Legacy, or A.Hearts] which oddly enough, all similar instances coming out in the same timespan.

As a Finlandaise person I can say that the Sami Council doesn't represent every Sami person. Also it's not cultural appropriation it's cultural appreciation. For a huge mmorpg to represent a very small minority in the frozen north in any way is a huge honor not an insult.
