Mog Bonanza and the Golden Saucer

So in ffxi the cancelled the Mog Bonanza for EU and NA players because they said it violated the laws of many countries, other sites have said it was the gambling laws. If this is the case for something as simple as mog bonanza how are they going to implement an actual casino (Gold Saucer) into xiv?

The North America and European Community Teams have been working diligently preparing for the Nomad Mog Bonanza, but unfortunately due to changing times and differing global laws, we will not be able to hold a Mog Bonanza for NA and EU regions moving forward.

While Japan will hold the Nomad Mog Bonanza at VanaFest 2012, it will mark the final Mog Bonanza of Vana’diel. Furthermore, to make sure that our players in North America and Europe aren't left out, we will be holding a separate event where players will be able to win similar prizes (all the goodies from tier 1, tier 2, and tier3…plus a bunch of other rare in-game items), so rest assured we will be giving you a good opportunity to make all your Vana’diel dreams come true!

Also, even though the Mog Bonanza will be gone, we will be offering a different event for our end of the year celebration for a chance to win the items of your dreams!

We will be announcing the NA/EU event very shortly, so hang tight and look forward to it!

It was never a problem before?

I know most state gambling laws are that you cannot pay to have a chance at winning something, that is illegal.

You can however reward people for a skill at something, like sinking a ball into a basket.

But this is a video game, does that make virtual poker illegal too? I'm so confused...

It could be laws which are always changin especially in regards to the internet now, but it could also be that they mistook the NA/EU complaning about the Japanese getting a raffle for good items and not them because it was illegal, rather than just being selfish (Since the NA/EU weren't getting the chance yet.)

Well as long as the Golden Saucer is filled with mini-games instead of lotteries I think it should be OK. I would assume the issue with the Mog Bonanza is that it is completely random, more like gambling than gaming.

In Korea, they just banned the sale of virtual items (As it counts as gambling and rips people off of their money making them spend more just to get said item)

This also affected games in Japan that used this method (Gachapon), Japan has it's own ban against things like gachapon.

    the logic:

"Players use real money to buy in-game currency used to get a special in-game item, that item is rare, forcing the player to spend more money getting in-game money to increase their chances of getting items, that is the equivalent of RMT and gambling and is used as a poor excuse for a source of profitability."

^yep. Companies had to get rid of this method (And this was a huge blow to the F2P market)

I have no clue how... maybe just off of regular monthly fees. TBH the ban was a rather stupid decision (This also hurts D3's Real Money Auction House) and this was all to combat RMT. lol
