Reckon personal experience is going to factor in a lot here.Idk maybe I’m playing some alternate reality version of the game but I think this idea that the general ffxiv player has a brain made of pudding is an over exaggeration. From what I’ve seen the average ffxiv player is…average lol. Dps generally do the bare minimum which is follow their rotation and use buffs at 120s. Healers almost always prioritise dps over healing which is exactly what they’re expected to do lol. Tanks generally use their cool downs and I’ve found most tanks will use their party based cool downs for big attacks as well.
This is just based on random duty finders but in my experience general players aren’t that bad lol. They’re not ‘that good’ either - just, well, average lol
I've been running a lot of the Normal raids to gear up some alt jobs since they unlocked the loot rules. If the other DPS use their party buffs every 120s that's an above average run for me.
I remember when we had more complex jobs... cleric stance, tank stances, etc. Not everyone was perfect or great at them, but more often than not, people tried to give advice to newer players to help them see how to optimize their job skills, rotations, etc.
Now everyone seems to be about getting their savage BiS, best parse possible, don't waste 3 seconds trying to talk or explain anything. Horror stories about people being reported for even trying to offer advice.
WoW things have changed in this game...
The average player? In my opinion.. no. Not optimally at least.

Honestly I'm not sure if it is that they don't know, or they don't care enough to try.
I feel like that when you do harder content the players tend to play better, but in stuff like experts and 24 man you get a lot of players who do the bare minimum. Not sure if it is the fact that you have a wider net cast, or the fact that they just require a pulse to clear so even the better players just half-ass it.
The devs did say in the past that they were not happy with the average players' performance and the gap between the average players and the top players.
So they informed us that they will be making changes to the skill floor to reduce the gap between players' performance. Which we can see in battle content duty design and jobs rework.
Nowadays, I think the average player is much better at the game.
I don't recall them saying that anywhere in words like that (or I missed it despite all the things I've watched and read for years), but it was something that was reflected in their actions and the fact they said they had seen people talk about 3.0 jobs but that they are happy with where they got it in 5.0 and want to keep it in that territory. The devs did say in the past that they were not happy with the average players' performance and the gap between the average players and the top players.

In fact, in Stormblood they would talk a lot about the idea that jobs should be unique and discuss being content with some jobs being challenging and some jobs being beginner-friendly. I even recall Yoshi-P making a sort of tier list in an interview once. There were discussions about how Astrologian was scaled well for good players but that it was underperforming because people weren't good.
But as we headed into Shadowbringers, all of that disappeared. There was no more talk of all jobs needing to be unique, things that had to be maintained became traits and slowly a wave of revamps began to make jobs less difficult to play, which was double-downed on in Endwalker.
In other news, there is no technical debt from 1.0.
"We don't have ... a technological issue that was carried over from 1.0, because ARR was meant to kind of discard what we had from 1.0 and rebuild it from the engine."

Im hardcore at being average as a gamer.
It was in one of the live letters leading to a new expansion (I honestly can't remember which one). Yoshi-P was using his hand to demonstrate the gap. He placed one hand at the top, and one at the bottom with a gap between them. Then he raised his lower hand closer to the top. Saying they want to reduce the gap by bringing the bottom up.I don't recall them saying that anywhere in words like that (or I missed it despite all the things I've watched and read for years), but it was something that was reflected in their actions and the fact they said they had seen people talk about 3.0 jobs but that they are happy with where they got it in 5.0 and want to keep it in that territory.

It was something that caught my attention even though they didn't talk about it in detail. It made me wonder "How will they do this?"
The reason I refer to "toxic casuals" in my posts is because FF14's casual community has this subset of people who display a childish hyperdefensive reaction to the mere implication that they could ever improve. And it's always a REaction too. Dare to suggest that the Ninja doing less damage than the Astrologian could probably take a few pointers? EW GROSS what do you PARSE HEADS want everyone to LIVE in the BALANCE DISCORD?
Imagine being this immature in any other hobby. See that accomplished rock climber? Want some advice? NO WAY. What is he some kind of NERD who thinks everyone should be perfect or quit? It's all so tiresome.
Imagine it being a game that people play to chill and have fun, not some kind of competitive sport that everyone needs to be perfect at. There are literally kids playing this game, and your /s comment about "parse heads" cuts both ways. They don't need people chiding them to git gud and improve their parse either. The reason I refer to "toxic casuals" in my posts is because FF14's casual community has this subset of people who display a childish hyperdefensive reaction to the mere implication that they could ever improve.
