I think that was a failed way to attempt keeping people conflict free, so to not deal with the entire conversation of “why did you delete me” and instead to just fade someone out without them having any idea you are doing so.

Tbf there are other ways to do it and still maintain that aspect.
It could be that putting someone on your blacklist would remove you from their friendslist, so you have the option to do it either way.
