Housing Idea: 3rd Floor (Attic) for Smalls

Just wanted to give this it’s own thread, since it came up in a larger thread on a different topic. It was suggested that smalls aren’t seen as appealing as the other house sizes. And for some, that might always be true, just based on aesthetic and preference. But if it’s just a matter of extra space…

A third floor/attic could be added to smalls, and along with that bump up the item limit a little, say an additional 100 indoor/10 outdoor items across the board for all sizes.

The staircase to the attic could go in the southwest corner of the ground floor, much like the down staircase is in the northeast corner. It might have to be a little bit steeper, since you’d probably only be able to have the same 3x3 grid like the ground floor up there. But pretty much all the housing skins/roofs make it look like there’s two floors above ground anyways. And because smalls don’t have any railings or balconies to contend with, it should be fairly simple from a layout standpoint.

A lot of people want to upgrade for that extra floor and higher item limits. And the current ward layouts only have so many medium and larges available. Raising the item limits slightly for every size and giving the smalls a third floor could make them a more attractive option to those who would normally be trying for medium or large. Or at least a consolation prize for those who can’t get one. Until we can actually get some kind instanced housing that gives us the ability to choose whatever size we want without having to wait for someone else to move!

Yes, all sizes of housing plots should be three floors, this would increase the appeal of smalls tremendously. Even if the third floor is smaller than the main and basement, it'll be a massive improvement for smalls still.

Here are my ideas for increasing the slots of housing plots similar to yours that wouldn't be a huge increase. Apartments should also get a balcony with a 15 item limit that is outside where you see the ward below. But since you can't see all apartments, the ward outside will have the same layout but all the plots will just have generic default structures so it doesn't have to load the actual ward itself and be easier on the servers.

    FC rooms: 150 inside
    Apartments: 15 outside, 150 inside
    Smalls: 25 outside, 250 inside
    Mediums: 40 outside, 400 inside
    Larges: 60 outside, 600 inside

You can do this anyway, in a fashion, using the "Wooden Loft":

Can see it to the right of the picture - granted I've chosen not to extend it very far, but the option is there. Though it isn't exactly another room in itself.

Rinoa: love the idea of an apartment balcony! I’d also like to see larger floor layout options too. I’ve mentioned it before, but I have this vision of a longer apartment, with a kind of split level loft in the back with stairs leading up to it, and since it would be a true floor, items could be placed there without floating! lol

Carin-Eri: there’s some amazing loft designs out there! My old next door neighbor had an awesome one I may try to copy someday. The only issue is that unless it’s a tabletop item, you have to float anything you want to put on a loft. I’ve finally learned how to float, but I don’t feel quite good enough to loft a whole floor’s worth of furniture yet! lol

I would love this idea and support it entirely! It would greatly improve the appeal of getting a small house, plus save on how much furniture you can place in the home. The craftable lofts and stairs can still be used in the event of wanting to do more, but having an upstairs would save on how much furniture you can place in the house if they don't increase the number of slots. I currently have a small house and would LOVE an upstairs as well. Please consider this SE. *prays*

Yes please, it bothers me that a lot of small exteriors have a window near the roof as if there’s an upper floor/loft. Who is it for…? Lol

Especially the taller ones, like the half timbered walls! lol

That would be a cute idea. Even with the loft items it can feel very cramped up there when moving the camera around.

Sorry, but I'd like more housing to become available if any server space increases happened first over redesigning layouts or increasing item limits.

There are people (Myself included) who have been trying for a house since 2.4 and have not ever gotten one. Fix acquiring problems for the entire playerbase before QoL upgrades for what is less than a quarter of the game's population.

I never use my basement, it's oddly shaped & larger than the entrance floor.
I'd much rather have a built in up stairs, instead of using items which take up the very limited item space
