Is it? Many regard World of Warcraft as the best mmo pvp available and they also offer bonus xp on wins, literal loot boxes for participation, and a weekly loot box based on time spent and performance. There are also things you can miss out on forever in the form of mounts and the like. So when you really think about it things like the series and daily xp bonus is just a standard modern mmo practice.

I don't really think anyone is forcing you to participate. There's plenty of content people don't participate in and it's fine. The mental sickness of "I have to do everything!" has become so pervasive in the mmo community and it's sad.
