The Official Forums is an EXTREMELY poor example of a "Good Community"

That's just online games in general now a days. Late 90s-2010 was the prime time to play online games, now everyone just weaponizes the ToS. Back in the day everyone just called each other _____, ____, ___, or even _____ and then we all laughed and moved on. lol

If you really want to see a cesspool, go look in the FF14 Steam Discussions. They complain but SE don't moderate it.

The forum here is pretty tame compared to the Steam Discussions.

Maybe it’s just me but I’ve noticed the majority of the English forums are populated by the same handful of people (*cough* healer forums *cough*) just posting infinitely about the same topic for years and years on end; screaming into an abyss that cannot hear them

About forums, well... gotta say it's much like how the world, nay, humans are.
Complaints unify people. You can see that anywhere you go, weirdly enough, a positive person seems to be boasting.
I've been playing since the end of 1.0 and it's always like that. You can be the gem that will sparkle some light here, but those clouds engulf your shine.
I've always lurked to read, and sometimes had my 0.01 cent to contribute, and when finish typing, cancel.
Humans won't change, we do.
We can only be responsible for our thoughts, actions and resolve.
So, smile and forge your way.
A smile better suits a hero (or a crazy person, be crazy. The normies won't stand.)

I mostly stay away from the debates and reply here and there to more conversational type posts. It's funny how often those blow up, regardless, though. I'm very easygoing, it's actually the thing people compliment me for most at work because retail gets stressful and chaotic, sometimes. That's probably why I'm not inclined to participate a lot. I can debate but at the first sign someone is losing their cool, so to speak, I just quit responding.

I'm not entirely sure where I'm going with this but my mother-in-law just passed away a few days before Christmas and your post resonated with me because death has a way of putting things in perspective. The family had been on bad terms for a long time and it took her death to spur a reconciliation. I never got involved. Maybe I could have made some difference if I had, or maybe it would have just sucked me in like quicksand. I don't know. But, I think I get and support what you're saying.

I agree with your post 100%.

I enjoy conversing with people and even debating topics but it gets old when it instantly becomes "you're censoring me" or "you're offending me" or "insert-why-i'm-a-victim-here" nonsense from every post you disagree with. The most relevant I can give you is the OPTION to hide Glamour that would be turned off by default stirred a huge outrage from people "not being able to be themselves" even though they'd never know if someone was using said feature (and people already do with mods so.. yeah).

I love having a proper debate when people don't bring in "oh so now you think YOU KNOW ME??" mindset.

The FFXIV community is easily the best gaming community I've been a part of.. In game. But people on the forums are so angry and so rude.

It's different because there is almost 0 moderation on here. The people playing the game and posting on reddit/forum arent different, just the effective rules are.

Oh, you just learn who the trolls are, recognize when they've made another new alt to get past a ban or a blacklist, and just don't bother with them. Once you don't bother with them a lot of the comunity is fine. Just if you see replies from people who are replying to the trolls and getting worked up, know that's time to leave that topic.
