There's no value to a lot of the market items since they come for free from ventures. People list them for any price and any price is a profit. If it wasn't possible to just magic items from ventures then prices would be a lot more stable.
I don't really understand the people who put items on the marketboard for exactly the item price though... or less...
Spot on. There is so much free stuff entering the server in the form of ventures (and other methods) that it removed the value of many items on the marketboard. There are so many times that I look up the value of some crafting material and the value of the material is more than the final product on the MB because the MB is just littered with venture trash. The raw material only has value because somebody probably wants to complete their crafting log, so they need it.There's no value to a lot of the market items since they come for free from ventures. I tried crafting recently and undercutting has really hurt trying to make a simple profit on stuff. Things normally going for 1.4 million now goes to 500K. Normally, I took to resolving it to just buying it and reselling it from there, but it can be a hassle. lol
Depending on what the item is, buying to resell comes with an inherent risk. If you buy my 500k item and relist it at 100k, I can just make another item and list it at 500k again. But if we are talking harder to get items, like rare mounts, the risk is likely less. But anything that is readily available to create more... reselling is risky (but possibly worthwhile, depending on the circumstances).
I once saw a few jet black dyes for sale. Normaly they would go for 495k/550k, but these were listed at 200k (and yes, the next one was over 500k). Bought them all, and sold all of them for 512k eachDepending on what the item is, buying to resell comes with an inherent risk. Under-cutters, the villains of sellers
But heroes to the buyers.

The truth is that with FFXIV, it's not undercuting that's a problem but the casualisation of crafting. Before to ARR, HW, SB. Crafting was only accessible to the most motivated, the majority of people stopped at level 30 because after that it became too complicated and required a lot of time to get the gear, then gather the components and then craft.I know this is a *huge* first world problem.
But really, we need to make it a reportable offense if someone undercuts massively. I'm seeing items that were previously going for over a million gil go to less than 200k in a day because people undercut by 200k each.
This is making it nearly impossible to make *any* money on the MB.
If you compare the components required for ARR and HW crafting to today, the components are extremely simple to gather and crafting is extremely easy.
Too many competitors and the prices go down. We used to be more reluctant to lower prices because the ratio of crafting time to selling price wasn't profitable.
Today, anyone can craft for very little effort.

Still Useless... To have so many Commendations in 2024
I miss when crafting and gathering was hard and not for everyone. Omnicrafter had meaning then, now anyone can claim they are a omnicrafter just by taking a day or two to level everything up.The truth is that with FFXIV, it's not undercuting that's a problem but the casualisation of crafting. I think it was more the time needed to level that discouraged players from trying it than the difficulty (since what difficulty there was only existed for the Master recipes). As soon as leveling became easier, almost everyone I knew started leveling crafting and gathering. Most of them still don't touch Master recipes.
