    Can someone explain LOS to me?

    I dont understand if i'm going crazy or what..
    Recently i started playing CC more, and sometimes, i noticed this more in the Volcano Map or wtv is called, that ranged managed to attack and damage me even behind walls.

    What am i missing? Is it some skill? Is it because they started casting before i was behind a repair?
    I am sure it is not dots


    Ok. it is ALWAYS marksman spike or smt, so i guess it ignores los even if the tooltip does not say so..

    LOS stands for "Line of sight" so essentially if you can't physical see it from your own characters eye's, you aren't gonna hit your target. Its like throwing a ball back and forth, you can't just throw the ball through a wall.

    But to answer your question, I am guessing it could be "lag" or possible "slide casting" where the actual cast goes off which is before the animation is done. So it could be possible that the game registered their cast going off before the game registered you behind the wall.

    Yes that makes sense, in fact if i try to heal a teammate that goes behind a wall i lose the cast, idem for attacks.. BUT i SOMETIMES get damaged even if i swear on my loved life NO enemies has me on their LOS.. so how is this possible? A friend told me that is because their cast started before i went behind a wall? is this the reason?
    also as i said above i think it was always the MCH lb, guess i'll do some testing

    I haven't played PVP enough to know but I do know what your talking about. Where the game just lags enough where you physical see yourself in a safe spot and lo and behold you get hit. But yet your ping never changes, buttons still seem to be hit. Its annoying.

    It's about how the server reads the player's actions and locations. Roughly speaking, when enemy started to cast or shoot, you were within their line of sight. That's why in some cases MCH's LB or casters spells hit even "through the wall", because the server counted attack and damage exactly at that point where you were, and it doesn't matter that you have already changed your coordinates. The same thing happens with AOE.

    The game engine is not designed for pvp. Not sure why they added it if they can't do it properly.

    So there is a term used for this: Snapshotting
    Unlike other games, how things register if they hit is not based on animation but the time of which your character receives the data.

    When an AOE goes off (When the orange indicator fades) the game takes a millisecond to take a picture of the area of effect after the ability goes off. If the hitbox of your character is inside that zone it registers as a hit. This also applies to moves. Cast bars take a snapshot of the action a half second before finishing a cast which is why they hit you through walls. The animation is not what you are looking for so much as when the ability goes off/The time the ability was hit when you were exposed.

    Practice a bit with PVE mobs and try moving into the animations once they go off rather than wait for the whole thing. Knowing how Snapshots work will improve your experience.

    Marksman doesn't ignore LOS actually. It has insane range but it's blocked by walls. If it manages to hit you, you were probably in sight for a short moment. Damage application even if it resolves after the animation lock for the skill, gets snapshot at the beginning most of the time. This is especially the case for Marksman, so even if you get LOS or guard after the trigger, you're eating the bullet. Recuperate spamm and preshielding is a better tool to fight against it tbh, because those will still resolve before the damage application.


    Also keep in mind that some abilities, especially from caster DPS (BLM superflare or SMN bahamut) do ignore walls.

    the game has a 950 hour delay between when an attack is used and when it actually hits you. its why you get CCd in guard 3 seconds after you cast it. or classes with a 10 yard charge ability are able to hit you from 40 yards away. its pretty awful. reminds me of vanilla warcraft. recommendation is to not take it seriously. at all.
