Sad with lottery results

My secret hope is that Island Sanctuaries is SE's test bed for seeing how the servers hold up to allowing everyone to have their own instanced area and that in the near future they'll apply the lessons they learned to instanced housing.

As a professional hater I'm inclined to think they wont have any intention of doing it until absolutely everyone never shuts the hell up about it like they did for Viera or anything else they weren't inclined to add normally.

The lottery wouldn't be so bad, but price of each ticket is what is bad about it. You have to put up the whole price of the plot for each ticket. If they made them say 10k each you could bid on more than one plot at a time. I don't think most players have enough Gil to bid on more than one at a time.

I've never done housing in the game, got an Apartment about a year ago mostly to dump all the (interior) housing stuff I've collected over 9 years of playing from events and random other stuff that was taking up MASSIVE Retainer limited inventory slots. I walked around some of the housing wards a couple days ago and noticed a lot of smalls with 2, 1, or even 0 bids on them. Mostly places that weren't particularly "special". People seemed to want the plots right near amenities (Aetherite, Market Board, etc), or ones in special places by themselves, like the island ones in Gridania.

But I noticed several plots of smalls on several of the wards just weren't being bid on at all. The plot I eventually put in a bid on had, of the 6 new Wards with two subdivisions each (12 total maps, one is just rotated 90 degrees from the other) only something like 3-4 people across all 12 bidding on that plot in either division. I had though to wait until the last day and find a house where few were bidding, but I figured I'd just pull the trigger and go ahead and put in my bid early so I didn't forget or something. Tossed in my Gil for the lottery on one ofthose plots with 0 bidders - Small size. Thought maybe I'd win, maybe I'd lose, if I lost I'd just get my Gil back and be no worse off than I was before. If I won, I'd have a nice cozy Small house I could play with as the mood struck over the years since they'd probably never be a better time to buy one or chance to get one with everyone else going for Mediums and Larges and premium location Smalls.

Hopped on today and saw people talking about housing and had a "Oh, right, I should check on that...!" moment. I won my house. I was the only one that bid on it. It's a Small. But it's my Small. As the saying goes "Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good".

They may mostly be Smalls, but if the argument is "I can do everything in an apartment but I need a house to garden and put all this external stuff I've gotten from seasonal events", well...a Small can do that very thing. But then I do tend to be one of those people content with what I have and maybe that's it. /shrug

What ever happened to having lottery and none lottery housing. I'm pretty sure Yoshi said once there was going to be wards that was first come first serve.

This...does kinda get me, too. I was thinking that they said that, but had thought maybe I just imagined it. I'd like them to do both, that way all the people saying the placard way is better would be experiencing the suffering in real time of trying the placard way and still losing out after 18+ hours of clicking and MIGHT realize that the lottery isn't really all that bad by comparison. The only way to prove that to people is to have both and let them see themselves, though, I think. Just make it where if you put in a lottery, you can't placard (no "insurance policy" shenanigans), and you can either do the placard way or the lottery and people can do the one they want and just be bound by the results.

The existence of player islands shows it is feasible since there's no limit on how many there are. Just treat it like islands with instancing and it'd go much smoother.

Keep in mind how LIMITED Island Sanctuary is. You can't place any individual things. You have specific plots in specific places, and they only take specific types of things, and your "customization" is only a matter of which of the 2/3 buildings you place in which of the 3 plots will accept them, and if you want to use a glamour prisim to turn it into the tier 1, tier 2, or tier 3 version of it.

Imagine that system translated to Housing. You get to pick only 10 total pieces of furniture, and you only have three models - Limsa, Ul'dah, or Gridania. you can't rotate the bed or chairs, their locations are preset in the house, you can only choose what combination to put in your four char slots, one table slot, one bed slot, one couch slot, and two display slots out of those three city-state designs. You cannot rotate them, cannot change the color of anything, and cannot place them just anywhere; only in their designated footprint and orientation.

I'm pretty sure most people would rather have an Apartment than instanced housing if it actually came to it. I personally hate Island Sanctuary and kind of wish they hadn't added it to the game since we'd probably have another Eureka or Bozja (content I actually like) if they hadn't. At the very least, I wish it wasn't a "middle management in a sweatshop factory" simulator. I'd rather farm and craft my own things and sell them rather than have those Mammets do all the stuff I want to do while I have the annoying job of being a managerial administrator on an island with next to no customization.

There were a number of smalls without bids in the Goblet. It's what I grabbed, and now I can enter the lottery again without worry. There are also the new servers which still have housing available.

I think the point is that you DON'T bid on multiple at the same time. The idea is you only bid on what you really want/have decided you will accept, not bid on everything you can or even remotely want to hope to grab what someone else doesn't get or get a consolation prize. The money is the price of the house - if you don't have that to put up front, that means you wouldn't be able to buy the house if you won, right? I dunno, it may not be the best system, but I think they designed it specifically because they wanted to prevent what you're suggesting as gaming the system.

Out of curiosity, have you considered a Small? Mediums are like 17M+. Smalls are 3-4M, probably 5M once you've built the structure and bought furniture and stuff to deck it out.

Oh, I have had a small for years, previously on Excalibur, and I have one here on Marilith as well. I think all the mediums/larges are already sold on this world by now anyway, so it's fine. I might save up enough for a medium by the time new wards come out (probably not). If anyone wanted a small here, you can get one without competition, easily.

I get attached to things, so if I had a small (or an anything) for years, I'd probably not want to move, but I'm sentimental like that.

It's not just sentiment. When you create something that works for you and that feels unique it's hard to tear it down just for a bit of extra space. The layouts of smalls mediums and larges are all different and you'll never recreate what you did the first time. If we could save housing layouts the way we do glamour plates (including all our glitches, floats and tricks) that would be ideal. The fun of housing is in the decorating but moving on always means tearing down. Like if every time you wrote a novel they burned all your previous ones. But yes smalls can be great. I've never bid on anything larger and I have enough gil to buy a good part of an entire ward at this point.

My Marilith small is close to my old one, and for that matter, my old plot location is empty in my ward as well. So no real issue here! I tend to get attached too, but moving here was a pretty much guarantee for a small, and I had no ties to anybody in my previous ward either.

Mari might still have some larger plots available tbh. Larges are prob gone but mediums are still iffy with the 10-12 ward fixes. I mean, I was able to find a medium with 0 so..

I wish I hadn't spent all my gil on dyes then (although..)! I know a medium in my current ward was abandoned and sold with about 8 bidders very recently. I need like 7 million gil..

People need to stop being snobs about smalls. You didn't even need to go to the Goblet to win one - there was a handful of smalls in MIST that finished with 0 bids(ward 27, Behemoth). I didn't even look around carefully, just checked a few plots in search of neighbors and found a few. I was the single bidder for mine as well.
Smalls are perfectly fine and often have better views than mediums.
