    Yes and no. I think the original FF limited spell names to 4 characters; you had, like "FIRE" and "FIR2" and "FIR3", yes, but also Sleep was "SLEP", Temper was "TMPR", Lightning was "LIT", etc.
    This, iirc, since 4 characters was sufficient on the JPN side, until the implementation of the 4th rank of spell (though the ending 'ja' can sometimes be considered a single character, since it's just a variant of 'ji'):
    ファイア、ファイラ、ファイガ、ファイジャ
    ブリザド、ブリザラ、ブリザガ、ブリザジャ

    Though, technically those would sound out as "Faira" "Faiga" "Faija" in themselves, which would sound awkward to us (Figa, Fija), so there's a degree of change in either case.

    I know this is XIV, so barebone or haphazard implementation of features is kind of our thing, but opt-in channels are hardly some novel idea, nor one easily forgiven about.

    I don't personally care either way, as I don't typically care for World PvP. But that's also why I've simply taken the option to opt out, consistently provided in any MMO remotely similar to XIV.

    You're the one purposely ignoring that forced World PvP games literally stand as their own genre. When included within any other kind of MMO, they are limited to opt-in forms of some kind, be that by server choice, channel/shard choice, or through discrete additional zones.

    To be fair, the original comment was asking for open-world PvP in order to deal with early-pullers in hunts. This would imply, at least to me, they weren't thinking of an opt-in system where those early pullers could simply choose not to participate in PvP and still get to do their thing.

    To OP’s original question: overhaul jobs entirely and abandon the trinity, Guildwars style. Give all jobs abilities to self heal or dodge mechanics, but in different ways.

    Rework to make the trinity actually matter. I remember a time where (as a tank) I had to focus hard on my enmity rotation just to keep the boss’ attention if an ally were geared above me. Or, if I was geared well, I could sneak a few dps rotations before needing to build, enmity back up. It was fun having to actually watch and balance the enmity bars. Healers could actually overheat and steal enmity.

    …ahhh the good ‘ol days.

    Fair, but I had also assumed that was a joking spitball. The means (WPvP) simply does not exist in any MMORPG without some degree of opt-in unless that whole game is specifically designed to be just WPvP. That'd obviously be especially true for XIV, since here PvP literally uses a different combat system.

    As such, you'd at nearest end up instead with an additional instance/channel of a given zone wherein Hunt spawns are more frequent (hastened based on, say, player-count, Hunt-kill-count, and player-kill-count), signaled in advance across different areas, are limited to a single party's credit, and offer (indirectly) increasing safety vs. other players as one increasingly burns down the hunt mob (making it increasingly difficult to steal mid-fight).

    Or, more likely, it'd be a zone designed that way from scratch, likely without flying in order to improve pathing, or even with the typical three-faction warfare kind of stuff such that it becomes an indefinite-match-length alternative to Frontlines.

    Now that I mention this, though I don't usually care for WPvP... that actually sounds way more fun than usual PvP / Frontlines.
