They don't need a new engine. Have you seen how XVI looks? They're using the same engine. All XIV needs is the upgrade that they're giving the game, considering also that's an MMO and that the needs of the game are a bit different.

From what I have read and heard from friends the game engine is a maxed out. They already changed the engine once from 1.0 to what they use now. All they need to do is upgrade the engine to new version to fix the problems. Most the money SE makes is from subscriptions here.
I wonder how costly it would be for them to actually have the game be more responsive. It doesn't come up as issue in most PvE situations considering how the fights are designed in fairly static way, but it's pretty janky in PvP where at times you can have Guard up for 2 whole seconds and still get hit by unmitigated stuff among other things.
I even doubt, that they will make bigger updates of the engine with 7.x. The engine is already capable to render better graphics. I guess, they will improve the character models and textures.
Cheers
It will probably be 8.0 or beyond if they every do anything major with the engine.
It would be safer to see where the game is going before committing to doing something that expensive and probably would herald the end of support for the ps4.
There is no reason to change the game engine, the word is kinda misunderstood.
It is more akin ... to how you would understand the word "language".
Would you personally change what language you use in your daily life or at work if someone had a "better language"?
Funny how that later sometimes happens: local businesses switching from national language to english and messing everything up
All I want is the ability to set render resolution independently of display resolution. Even FFXI could do that.
I wish.
Then maybe the combat system won't be garbage
and they could stop making classes exactly the same!
But nah, we'll just be getting beautiful 1.0 textures now lmao.
We have not been told this. A new engine is stretching what they said too far. The last time we had a new engine it required a new copy of the game, a new client to be downloaded and a cinematic with Bahamut destroying the environment. Whatever calamities happen in the future, I do not think they are quite on the scale of re-releasing the game.
This is what we were told. They will be upgrading the shaders, upscaling the textures used on faces and grass, adding more objects to the environment and increasing the amount of lights used.upgrading graphic of the game.
They went into quite a lot of detail. You can watch it yourself or read the forum summary.

In other news, there is no technical debt from 1.0.
"We don't have ... a technological issue that was carried over from 1.0, because ARR was meant to kind of discard what we had from 1.0 and rebuild it from the engine."

Oh good, you can ask the other CEOs this during the next meeting:
WHERE IS THE NEW DANCE SUMMIT, ENIX?! YOU HAVE BEEN PROMISING THAT WE WOULD GET A NEW BUST A MOVE/DANCE SUMMIT SINCE 2002.
