While auto-running, you can move the camera with left mouse button without changing your character facing. Right mouse button will still change your character's facing during auto-run.

Error 3102 Club, Order of the 52nd Hour
Exactly, why does left mouse work like it should while auto running, but not during normal running?
It seems like such an easy / obvious thing to fix
It's the way the movement buttons work, not the mouse. The mouse does what it should do: move the camera. That much is working correctly. The thing about movement, however, is that legacy mode is by definition camera-based movement. So when you press the movement keys, your character will always move the direction you press, oriented with the camera. That much is also working correctly. When you stop pressing the movement keys, you can move the camera without changing your facing again.

I get that, but why then not have two separate cameras that work together?
One camera for movement controlled with the right mouse button, and one camera for viewing purposes controlled by the left mouse button?
When you press the left mouse button, the viewing camera would take over, without taking away the control over your character.
Is that not possible?
Something must be flying over my head; because as far as I know, it doesn't matter whether you're stationary, auto-running or normal-running. Pressing LMB has never changed the direction my character was facing.
Huh, that's weird.
Maybe I have some setting activated I don't know about that makes my character move along my LMB movements

Just in case, you wouldn't happen to be pressing LMB and RMB at the same time? That's a whole different thing.
Nah, of course not.
I'm just holding the LMB while running around
Let's assume you're pressing the "w" button, and only the "w" button to move.
Does your LMB not turn your character in the direction the camera is facing towards?
