Changing Chocobo Color

Last time I tried to so this, it never ended up at the color I wanted... BUT the color it was (ink blue I think) looked on screen as black. So I found a calculator that said this:

<You will see a message that your chocobo is beginning to grow new feathers each time the colour changes as you feed, this confirms that your chocobo will be a different colour in 6 hours. If you don't see this message, you should feed an additional 1-2 of the recommended fruit until you do.>

So there are like 34 steps to get from yellow to white... does the above MEAN that I apply a snack and wait for the message before I go onto the next snack? Which would mean I need a lot more of each of the three snacks it needs (the last time I did it, I rarely saw that message and did not know whether to wait for it or not).

feed them all in one go as the calculator told you (the amounts). Just remember to alternate between the different fruits so you dont blow out one colour.
