I didn't pay for my Windows 7, since I got it for free from college. That made it more bearable, but it's still a bad OS.

Looks like people hate on Windows because it's the most popular OS on the planet? Lawl.

That's a shame, too, because I don't ever see SE porting ARR to Linux. Why? The reasons have already been stated. Don't count on something that has such an abysmal chance of ever actually happening.

There was an abysmal chance of FFXIV being completely re-written two years ago too. Look at what we have today, ARR waiting right around the corner with a completely re-done world and engine.

I don't care if the support for Linux comes in 2 years, but it's definitely something SE should start looking at when developing their games. The time when Windows reigned supreme for gaming is fading away, slowly but surely.

LOL cash shop! SE's way to tell their player how they appreciate them... pull the carrot and empty your pockets $$$
And to those who support it: you are kicking yourselves. -- We just need to sit back and laugh at people with cash shop items.
    (Marvelous economics IQ test!)

lmao, 'because it's popular'. Yeah, that's it.

And not the fact that DX is a piece of s**t, that it's not stable in the way linux is, that upgrades and updates will eventually cost you, that error reporting is less detailed in Windows, that it's actually LESS performant than Linux, and that they're trying to push a tablet OS with the newest version.

Yeah. It's because it's popular and I'm trying to be indie.

I don't use Linux right now because of issues with my laptop's switchable graphics making gaming completely impossible (do not buy HP laptops) but I have used it and if I could play games and had the amount of software compaibility as windows I would use linux as my sole OS.

I do agree with everything here, the only time linux has crashed on me is when I cause it, no BSOD, no lockups, large OS updates twice a year. fast security patches and huge customization possibilities.

Linux trumps windows in all areas except software compatibility and switchable graphics.

Windows is only the most popular OS because laptops ship with it, no other reason, and the reason it has better software compatibility is because it is more popular (again going back to the fact it is factory installed)

The reason OSX isn't as popular as windows as well is because Macs are so expensive compared to PCs.

That's a shame, because software compatibility isn't a 'small problem'; it's actually quite a huge problem, with all of the software, games, and other things out there that ARE NOT useable on Linux. Software compatibility is one of Linux's biggest problems, and until it's fixed, Linux will never be as huge as Windows. That's just fact.

Except that they already have the openGL code from the PS3 version... So the biggest part is done. And since SE is familiar with the PS3, it's familiar with openGL (unlike with DX it seems, see the alt-tab crashing issue), so they don't even have to train people in openGL.

Idk what you do to your windows, but mine is as stable as my linux.

Yeah, that's why I stick with win7. Maybe linux will win more support in the future, Valve porting steam is great news already.

Is OpenGL the entirety of the Linux OS? If so, then sure, pretty much any game from PS3 could make it to Linux (if what you say is true).. but, I'm pretty sure there's way more to deal with than just OpenGL.

And even then, the only way I see SE porting this to Linux is far, far down the road after the game has been out for awhile and they've possibly profited from it. However, with the miniscule amount of Linux users against the overwhelming majority of the world using Windows, I don't ever see the game being ported. One person's demands for it won't make that happen.

Yes, it isn't. But it's much more work to port something from DX to openGL (full rewrite) than making adjustments to the C code (loading different libs, etc) IMHO.

The only anecdotal thing here is you fanaticism.

Newsflash: Linux system updates require restarts just like windows system updates. While linux updaters typically include system AND program updates, it's system updates only on windows, which is why in most cases (no, not every time) you will have to restart your system. A point you are deliberately overlooking if you ask me.

You knowledge about windows coming to a halt on appcrashes seems to come from win98....

And I had my share of kernel panics and misbehaving drivers (rt2870, anyone?) on linux just like I had my share of BSODs on windows. Not to mention it's much easier to break a linux system if you don't know what you're doing.

These are less of an issue for home users, but they're still a thing and I heavily dislike Windows for the way it manages crashes.
Don't poke the gears and it won't crash. The only times windows 7 BSODs is when a driver misbehaves, which isn't the fault of the OS but the driver maintainer.

Each OS has it's share of quirks, no need to hate on either. The only question here is, which quirks are easier to live with for you, which is an individual decision.

For me, software under linux is often lacking completeness. They implement partial support for something and move on once basic functionality is working. I refuse to bend over backwards just because the software is free.

There is nothing hard about linux. For a user who just wants to do office and surfing as well as watching some videos or listening to music, the experience is not different from windows. If you think otherwise, then it's maybe time to try out a recent linux distribution.

I agree linux isn't hard but to get a larger mainstream user base the community needs to quit saber rattling that people who don't get how something works on it are idiots and start working on teaching them how to do it properly. I was using his response to the other player as a prime example of an ill will attitude to those who can't grasp at it as well.
