Gaming isn't the only thing I do on my PC that sucks on linux. Try getting two MIDI interfaces and two soundcards working in Linux, in a single application. I'll tell you the outcome right now, it ain't gonna happen.I would say if there are more games on linux there would be more gamers, if you didn't have to pay for your os and it did everything you wanted. Wouldn't you use that over something that cost 200 bucks? They do pretty much the same thing?
The port really wouldn't be all that hard I'm sure the ffxiv engine for the ps3 uses OpenGL.
I don't care if it launches on linux for 2.0 but in the future after SE is turning a profit it wouldn't be a bad thing.
@Allcars
It's based on OpenGL, but not exactly the same. It might be easy to change things around to make your code entirely OpenGL compliant, but I dunno exactly how much work it would be.
The real question is if SE thinks it's worth it to include an OpenGL renderer for the windows version when there already is DirectX there. The number of games that let you choose between DX and OGL is... diminishing to say the least. Within the last 10 years, I can't think of more than WoW. Maybe games based on the Source engine let you do it? I'm not sure. Mac compatible games need OpenGL support, naturally, but far from all of those games offer OpenGL on the windows versions.

That does sucks, I haven't works much with Linux, but I really do like the ideas behind the OS. I would like more options than just windows.
If anything i would think they would be more likely to make it for Mac OS before they would consider Linux. Other than mobile and Servers (which the game would not be ideal if even feasible) the market share on desktop/laptops is trivial even compared to Mac.I think Final Fantasy XIV should be ported over to Linux sometime after 2.0. Why? There are very few games made to work with it without the need of another program to emulate it. It would open up the opportunity to get more players in the game!
Do you guys think there is a chance of Square Enix doing this?
I'm alright to them making a mac port too.
I expect we'll see an Xbox version long before a Linux version of the game. Linux just doesn't have a strong enough marketshare to make a port worthwhile -- especially something as expensive as an MMO.
That is why I am alright with that.
I too see an xbox release before linux if ever.
Linux is sort of a in a hard spot, when it comes to this sort of thing, companies don't release software for it because their market share wouldn't really pay off, and people don't use it because companies don't release software on it. But if companies did start releasing software for it linux there isn't really a reason why it couldn't grow at a rapid rate.
With Valve porting Steam to linux and cooperating closely with Intel to fix most of the bugs, I can see the situation slowly changing.
Installed linux mint (cinnamon ver) and love it so far, no bugginess of ubuntu's 12.04 release so far. Now to install wine on it and hope it will run better than it did on ubuntu...

A linux port would be pure awesome. Steam is already launching on linux and with windows 8 coming, maybe it is the right time for it since people that are disgusted by it would happilly go and install linux if they know that there are games there. FF's game engine is already ported on ps3 so it shouln't be that much of a hassle to port it on linux or make a windows opengl version of the client which would run very well on wine. I'm an Archlinux user and i'd really like being able to just throw windows out of my computer, it would be really good if square enix could follow vavle on their way to enlightment(and participate in the destruction of the worst software company ever!).
best regards,
Me!
PS: there is an enormous difference between linux and macOS : linux can be (easily) installed on most pc(and with just a few tricks on the rest).
