As for games that run on MacOSX... the largest development firms have already adopted the operating system. Blizzard, EA, Firaxis, Vavle, etc. The old days of MacOSX not having anything to play are long over. This is especially since Valve put a lot of pressure on developers to make Mac versions. When the digital distribution platform that owns 80% of the market tells you should support a certain OS or hardware, or risk not having your title on it, developers get their s**t moving.
Its not that the games break, and wont run. Its that running them on 7 nets them more performance. Its not going from 10 FPS to 90, but performance gains are performance gains.

Also...No, not really. Blizzard has always made Mac versions of their games. EA basically only has "The Sims" and a very select few other titles on Mac. I wouldnt really call Firaxis one of "The largest development firms", but once again, isnt new to the Mac scene like Blizzard.

Not many people are switching over to Mac. Some companies take their popular titles (generally the "family friendly" games, such as The Sims) and port those to Mac. Hell, Activision isnt even bothering with porting the CoD series to the Mac anymore. Valve isnt putting pressure on anyone. Valve isnt going to blacklist companies because they dont want to make OSX ports of their games, thats not how Valve operates. Gave might say "I would like to see more people make their games available to OSX users", but he will NEVER make that a requirement to be on Steam. Check it out for yourself, out of the over 1,600 games on Steam, not even 300 of them can be played on OSX, and damn near all those 250~ titles are indie games. There is no push for OSX development, even less so when people can just use Bootcamp.

I know it does run faster than Windows ever did on it!
I don't think its quite that bad, but according to the Ubuntu website you need a minimum of 384MB of RAM for 32 bit and 512 for 64 bit, compare that to the 1GB for 32 bit and 2GB for 64 bit on Windows 7.

In addition Ubuntu works out the box (you may need to download some proprietory drivers, I have only seen my graphics card) as I say Linux trumps Windows in every way except compatibility because alot of developers refuse to program for Linux, if that changed so many more people would use it.

Well you need to remember, Linux is a very basic OS. It pretty much is just a command prompt. Not exactly a bad thing, its part of what makes it so secure. Its hard to compare to Windows though, because both OS are trying to do different things.

Also, it works out of the box...sorta. On desktops its mostly fine, but on a lot of laptops...not so much. Youll find a lot more driver issues there. Also, Windows has gotten really good at just being able to plug in a device, and have it work. It also will now find the latest drivers for a lot of things too.

Linux is whatever the end user wants it to be, yes alot of it runs off scripts like xorg, but if you want a very lightweight OS its perfect out of the box, however if you want an atheistically pleasing OS, you can download packages to make it look better, like compiz config manager, etc.

An operating system is used to manage the hardware software and provide an interface to control your PC from, nothing more, Windows just add loads of crap you don't need like aero which push the requirements up, they are doing the same thing, its just Windows is full of bloatware.

And I have only ever run Ubuntu on a laptop, I only ever get asked for to download my graphics drivers, and the only serious problem I have had is hybrid graphics, because xorg has problems, but the developers of both graphics cards and Linux are working to fix it.

I would like to know if SE would consider Linux FFXIV, perhaps include it in a players poll to see if there is enough interest.

Camate, Rukkiri, Bayhone, Okipuit help us

I'm all for it! See how many people use Linux at all, and would like to see a Linux version of XIV, perhaps? Or something like that, anyway...

The angels dance like feathers float, they're here to see and to be seen,
The clock strikes two, the music slows and each one slowly dons their wings,
Once outside they all pair off and hand in hand they leave
But I'm still waiting, yeah, and I'm still waiting

I would have Ubuntu as my primary OS if they do, of course I will need to sort my hybrid graphics first (been working on that one for months)

No way. It doesn't matter how many people actually use Linux, it's a matter of how many want to play games on it. Look at the statistics for things like the Humble Bundle: http://www.humblebundle.com/

Linux is a very niche market for games, which is why not many games are made for it. Mac users have relatively few choices in games as well, *especially* for MMOs, so even that would be more likely. Though, as others pointed out, the graphics engine wasn't built for it, so it's very unlikely.
