That's what I noticed too. They seem to be arguing against linux simply because it's linux.

But I still don't think FFXIV's dev team is competent enough to make an OpenGL game.
As said multiple times in this thread already, the PS3 uses openGL, so they certainly have more experience with openGL than with directX

Yeah, Windows is kind of a dick when it comes to overwriting other bootloaders.

All in all, i do not think that the devs are going to have time to get a linux version working for 2.0 launch, but it would be nice to see in the future. we worked really hard on FFXI and for the last three years that i played it seriously (ending about this time last year) i played it exclusively in linux and it ran MUCH better than in windows, with the exception of shadows. many people worked hard on FFXIV and it is funtional and playable, though currently not anywhere near what i have seen in windows7. That being said, it has come a long way from .5-3frames per second to the current 15-28 frames per second.

I do not understand the opposition to the idea of SE releasing a linux client. How would it effect you if i were able to play in my preferred OS? and if it were released on Mac, well, that would be tantamount to releasing it covertly for linux, so long as they didnt try to lock it down too hard.

as for first person shooters vs MMOs on linux, it is the general playerbase for linux, we do not normally require the handholding that a large minority of windows and mac users require and whine about when they dont get it. true it is probably only 10% of the players who are users and not techs/admins, but not helping them step by step would kill a game. the percentage of funtioning linux gamers that want handholding is much lower, though there are those who think it makes them cooler to use linux but downt want to learn.

I would just like to see it be a little easier, it is not like we are pirating the game or cheating, code injecting or anything like that. we just want the extra locks taken off of the steering wheel.

Wow, I agree with all this 110% you hit all the nails on the head.

I think it would be best if SE can get all gamers on all possible platforms to get as many customers as possible.

I think there should be more options windows 7 is nice and all but the future of windows being windows 8 looks awful, that tile UI makes me want to smash everything in my room! The fact that most versions of Linux are free and open-source really makes me want to jump shit but being a big gamer that is going to be really tough because I don't really like wine.

With a large market of smart phones all using OpenGL and with each generation of smart phone the better the graphics and more robust OpenGL gets I could see it one day passing DirectX.

I would like to stop supporting corporate control over our computers and lives. This is a step in the right direction in my eyes.

Here is an interview with Gabe Newell he hate windows 8 http://www.theverge.com/2012/7/25/31...ws-8-interview

Do you guys think there is a chance of Square Enix doing this?
yes, lets get all 10 linux gamers to play this game! that will be worth the dev time!

I would say if there are more games on linux there would be more gamers, if you didn't have to pay for your os and it did everything you wanted. Wouldn't you use that over something that cost 200 bucks? They do pretty much the same thing?

The port really wouldn't be all that hard I'm sure the ffxiv engine for the ps3 uses OpenGL.

I don't care if it launches on linux for 2.0 but in the future after SE is turning a profit it wouldn't be a bad thing.

Gaming isn't the only thing I do on my PC that sucks on linux. Try getting two MIDI interfaces and two soundcards working in Linux, in a single application. I'll tell you the outcome right now, it ain't gonna happen.

That does sucks, I haven't works much with Linux, but I really do like the ideas behind the OS. I would like more options than just windows.
