A question of worth on rewards for an activity...

So there is this pattern in the game where we get a patch and get some new rewards, such as armor and weapons for savage. Months go by and people are trying to clear to get the rewards, but as time goes on new rewards get released and the value of those prior shiny rewards from savage start to seem less and less worthwhile, especially when you start getting to the final mile and the difficulty and hours put in ramps up.

So lets say the reward for the hardship loses all its luster because half a year to seven months go by since you started. Is there still value somewhere in trying to get that final reward to you?

Just kind of asking this to other people that have done savage and been down this road.

For me, it really feels weird at the end of a savage tier because it seems like way too much time and dedication for such a minor thing at the end. At the start it is all "wow look at that item", but then at the end they usually have new stuff on the horizon that eclipses it or perhaps has a better / different aesthetic.

Gear powercreep is how MMOs keep people playing, you probably shouldn't even bother playing savages at all if you only care about getting BiS and don't enjoy the fights for what they are.

Its not content for everyone, and not playing it is completely understandable.

I kind of get this pre-raid finder feel with FFXIV savage runs where because they don't give the cosmetic rewards in a more mainstream content it forces a lot of people into the same pool. If lower iLvL but equally customizable armor, plus the weapon, were available in more mainstream content such as raid-finder from WoW, I think the experience would be a lot more niche for savage but better because of it.

Also, people could be after BiS for big numbers OR after the armor and weapon merely because that is the only way to get dyable versions, let alone the matching weapon. That's why many people retro run the old savage tiers unsynced and it is a driver for the current tiers.

Well I wouldn't say it doesnt give a cosmetic reward, this tier's armor and weapons will probably be very popular for glams forever now.

You get a cosmetic reward for completing savage but it is a pretty poor reward for the effort that goes into it when on content. Also not sure what universe this is but from what I've seen, most people don't really "enjoy" savage, they accept doing it as the only way to get the rewards they are after. It doesn't matter much what that reward is to the person, it is the same song and dance done over and over every single tier. People make the most of misery with friends but go take that fun comradery out of the picture and you'll quickly see things turn into nothing but a business style regiment of always having to study and be on top of things or inevitably get scorned for failure.

    ^this,

    Its why I don’t bother with savage altogether;

    - Time consuming & rather spend it elsewhere irl or ingame
    - Rigid static scheduling
    - Item level is only 10 levels difference…really that worth it aside from glamour?
    - Every patch always provides upgrades for Tomes gearing & to be frank no one bothers to care for parse or ilevel differences given 90% roughly of players spend their time on hanging out, farming, maps, roulettes, glamour hunting etc.,

I cannot speak any ill to those that does engage on it; I just simply find it futile & time consuming.

PS: Static 5-7 hours of re-hearsing or re-do over again? Nah…..

Yes, I do long and hard grinds or fights for rewards, knowing full well they will get nerfed or become easier long in the future. Being able to show the rewards early on is fun as well because everyone else who has it you know put in the work you did, so you feel like you've all done it together in a way.

But what is the value of all that work long in the future, when all the rewards are easy to get because of nerfs and unsyncing? The answer is the experience and the memories. The rewards are just a motivator to gain those experiences and memories that I can share with people years later.

In other news, there is no technical debt from 1.0.
"We don't have ... a technological issue that was carried over from 1.0, because ARR was meant to kind of discard what we had from 1.0 and rebuild it from the engine."

It's a mixed bag for me. By nature I'm an r/patientgamers so I will wait for rewards on something if I want it for glam reasons because usually next next expansion makes the best possible gear of last expansion obsolete almost immediately.

I WOULD be into the raiding scene and doing things for the challenge...if it was a solo ordeal. However it takes a group to be nearly perfect and I don't have the patience when it comes to OTHER people. Patience for myself though and what I want? I got that.

I care very little about the stats or ilvl of savage gear. I do savage to have fun with friends and to get shiny glams/mounts.

I can't really speak for Savage since I usually wait until they can be unsynced, but EX fights I've done on content, and I do it for fun with friends and mounts. I cared about the weapon from EX4 but never got it... but that doesn't mean I can't continue trying to actually down it and have fun with my friends doing it. I'm never actually BiS anyway, just what I feel is my own personal BiS. But if I ever did do Savage fights on content, it'd be for the time spent with my friends and actually doing the content and getting the sense of satisfaction that I completed it.
