If I remember correctly, Tanaka used to set his goal on DoH/DoL as one individual own class that players could play from start until end. However, Yoshida has his opinion differently and plan to change DoH/DoL become just sub-set in v 2.0.
I think I prefer the yoshida decision, because I couldn't see how players could have all the fun by playing as DoL/DoH alone and avoid all the fighting. Battle is one of the most important aspect in MMO game,
However, the current situation has failed on logic so badly. Says... You are a master of figther who has highest rank skills in martial art, sword play, axe, spear, bow, and all the spells. Then, one days you explore into a cave and you see some gold mine. So you pick up a pickaxe and suddenly your battle capability become near zero that you could died from little rat. How does this make sense here? Why can't you use your axe skills on your pickaxe? Why your HP drop all suddenly just because you take pickaxe on your hand? Is the pickaxe drain all of your strength from you because it is cursed?
I'm agree with you here, Mr Yoshida that it is fun to have some battle in the game, and I think it would be better if you have to do challenge battle while mining in dangerous cave for high rank ore. Which is why I have two suggestions here to offer. it may not be the best, but it is what would make mining more fun task in my opinion. Also, not fail from common sense too hard.
Plan A . Remove DoL from bad armory system and turn it into a real sub-set rank from battle-classes as mentioned before. (No longer make DoL a main class)
Says you could be a R50 Gladiator, and R43 miner at the same time. You equip Sword and Shield on your weapon slot, while you equal pickaxe on your "pack slot". Then, you could use your pickaxe anytime you spot the mine without changing class from Gladiator. This is the system that most RPG game use so far. You never change your class just because you want to gathering, you always do it on your battle class. (of course, there could be variation between people who wears battle suit to focus on battle status, or wears gathering suit to focus on gathering)
Plan B : Allow DoL to use some WS and ability from battle classes in weaker form.
DoL tool also need to have minimal "damage" "DPS" status too. (I think FF13 has weapon similar to fishing rod that Vanilla is using, so make those weapon capability wouldn't fail on FF logic). This way will allow DoL to put up little fight by himself. Content that require fighting mix with gathering will become possible. And it should not be a problem when 2.0 will require everybody to have battle class as main. (Plan B is incase if you can't remove DoL from armory system or make it a sub)
To me, I wish that 2.0 would follow the traditional RPG style and choose the plan B! Gathering would be much less hassle, and it could be a lot more fun than the current situation that majority are complaining. Gathering class should never be main class since the beginning, I never heard any other game make it that way before. Not even FF11. So I would like you to make it a real "sub" class. Please remove it from the current way as how your main status are based of it only which disable all battle aspect.

So here is to sum up this thread in short :
1. I want DoL to be completely sub class, please remove it from armory system just like any other RPG where you can hold pickaxe to mine any times without change into a weak miner.
2. If DoL can't be sub-class due to limitation. Then at least give DoL some battle ability to fight obstructed mob without change class. (it is so annoying to change class while you gathering!!!)
