My guess would be the people judging them give most entries maybe a second or two of a glance then make some sort of judgement on that. So naturally they would gain more information about what an entry was if they used styles, descriptions, and layouts that was more aligned to what the team is used to working with.
I'm sure they give every entry a decent amount of time, but certain things you can see right away will look awkward at best or be difficult to implement. Some of the sage weapon designs are too round in shape. If the laser shark entry had been done as a longer and leaner wing model, it might've had a better shot.
