@OP, Why just cant we have the best of the two worlds instead just have to pick one? i like more the strategy, but i must admit there would be alot of stuff be taken from action games i would like get implemented here too.
Don't be silly, Ifrit requires miles more strategy and coordination than things like Anub'arak HM or Yogg HM!
/cough
Funny, many of the people that didn't want action-oriented combat and wanted auto-attack were "casual" players; many that have wanted "FFXI-2" didn't want auto-attack to return and preferred that SE improved the combat system without it.
True story.. as i saind in mine topic, the greatest problem is that ppl only played XI endgame, and don't really have an idea of what "hard" could be. (omg how i hated yogg and anub xD)
To answer the OP, I wonder about it sometimes.
At launch, with the stamina, I think it was intended to be a blend. Choosing an assortment of commands to attack, being able to manually raise our shield, many of the weapon skills had to be aimed and could be dodged. Perhaps a slower-paced battle system of FF13.
I would have liked to see the pacing of a FF13/FF13-2 fight. I think for me, the combat could be about 25% faster. The lower levels (brand new player perspective), this is more noticeable with less actions to choose from. Perhaps the 0.5 to 1 second lag between actions may play a role in this feeling of responsiveness as well. You get used it after a while.
Action game? XIV has a pretty typical MMO battle system. Only deal is the UI is so slow that it takes forever to register commands, making the combat itself much slower than other auto-attack MMOs. I like twitchy games but you don't really need fast reactions for this just preparation. Like it's easy to react to Ifrit's eruptions or Moogle Eye Shot if you aren't animation locked.
Kinda glad the game is so slow because like I said, the UI wouldn't be able to deal with anything that needs fast reactions.
I like the slower pace of this game and I hope it doesn't get all twitchy on me. If I wanted that I would be playing something else.
Spamming your normal attack until you had enough tp to weaponskill is a lot less action than the current combat system. Not sure what other attack commands were in your "assortment" but it was basically an auto-attack that required confirmation every swing. Having to position yourself for combos, especially while solo, is a lot more fun, and frustrating at times, than spamming normal swing in my opinion. To answer the OP, I wonder about it sometimes.

As for the dodging of enemy weaponskills, that hasn't changed. I'm fairly certain that none of the directional weaponskills were taken out, maybe you just don't know which ones are possible to dodge.
skillful play. not hack & slash
