I also think it's funny when I'm chopping wood and it tells me "You sense maple branches below where you are chopping." immediately followed with "There is nothing left to gather at this location." I suppose that means my senses are wack.

That can be weird, yes. But that means that you've just exhausted the node for now (or ran out of attempts I forget which). However, next time you attempt in the same place the maple branches will be in the very same place still, so you know where to aim for next time.
