Do you ever put mobs to sleep?

Working my way through the Shadowbringers healer quests a couple of days ago, and it asked that I put a mob to sleep.

Made me realise I didn't even have it on my hotbar.

I have yet to encounter a situation in FF14 where I have had to put a mob to sleep. Over MMOs, sure. But are there that many situations in this game where crowd control is important?

Casting Holy seems to be a much better way of stopping mobs cause damage since sleep is broken by the rampant AOE anyway,

There was a time when more tactical play was a thing..like, 3.0 era. Certain dungeons even possibilities of larger packs/careful pulling like Aurum Vale. Sleep was a valid tactic, especially if the dps didn’t have AoE yet. Or when single target damage was generally better than AoE. Or sleeping boss adds (like the scorpion adds at the end of Toto-Rak)

Of course, this was also an era of Stoneskin and Protect, so parties had a variety of options to mitigate damage. It was good times to me, but it is what it is.

Ive only ever used it in very specific solo duties in class quests where some mobs can overwhelm a squishy mage. The Conjurer lv.30 fight and Thaumaturge lv.20 fight come

Honestly wouldn’t mind even if was a limited “see how jobs worked event”. I loved how complex dark knight was!

The only time I ever did it in the last ~3 years was putting enemies to sleep when the tank/healer died.

The thaumaturge quest NPC tells you to use your sleep spell if you ever have to fight several enemies at once. The encounter you head into after he gives this bit of advice does throw multiple melee enemies at you, and it's much easier if you cast your (AoE, unlike the near-worthless healer version) sleep spell at them, and then take on one enemy at a time.

    The Threat of Superiority
Rather than attempting to engage an entire gang of their thugs, I would suggest you neutralize the threat to your person with a well-timed Sleep spell
I've seen other new players going through those quests, or fighting under similar circumstances, struggling and sometimes dying while getting smacked around.

Aside from scripted encounters, I did use sleep to save several bad pulls while leveling thaumaturge and black mage. First run of Sastasha: tank pulls the whole last room, even uses the one LB bar for more mitigation, and dies anyway. Swiftcast the first sleep, then surecast a second for the stragglers, and we recovered.

When I was going through the MSQ I did. Never in a dungeon, but a lot of times I'd have lots of aggro mobs on me preventing me from talking to npcs or interacting with objectives, especially in ARR content. So I'd just sleep them, ignore them and do whatever I needed to do.

    • When a big pull goes awry in dungeon. Hopefully the other DPS won’t go nuts with their AoE game & waking up the mobs.
    • Questing. Need to bring smth from aggressive mobs infested zones? Just put them to sleep, if you can.
    • Eureka/BSF. They are life saver so long target mob is not resistance & have prominent use in Baldesion Arsenal.
    • Pseudo stun tool. Your tank/ranged don’t know the concept of interrupting/stunning when that mob is charging their AoE? Then perhaps Repose/Sleep may do the trick. The only time I use Repose/Sleep for this purpose is at Sohm Al (Hard) red jellies.

Basically under normal circumstances, they’re not going to see any use.

I put rare enemies in Bozja/Zadnor to sleep before casting Lost Death on them so they don't immediately chase me down and murder me. Other than that, I haven't really used the spells.
