The player search system works much better and I frequently find people though it (though most group leaders I meet seem completely oblivious), but it has the major flaw of not allowing searching by name. Sometimes you just want to see if someone is online/where someone is, but I haven't been able to figure out how. It has some nice features but overall it's still not as usable as the FFXI search.

Friendlist allow you to check if the player online or not.

I have to say this is my thought as well. My experience has always been best doing it the old-school way. Find people using the player search system who are on a suitable class/level, send a tell and see what comes of it. Managed to put together a six-hour party together that way with five of the people staying for the entirity of the six hours. Was fantastic for experience, fantastic for chatter, fantastic for meeting new people and just overall enjoyable. We start off asking the English people who are sitting around in towns (my girlfriend and I are rather social so this helps) but are not averse to asking people of other languages and make full use of Google Translate to ensure nobody is left out. I find Google Translate especially useful when we are waiting around because I can only imagine that people who don't speak English could get really confused as to how things are progressing. But yeah, player search is key for me, so much easier and people are often happy to join up. We once managed an 8 person party in five minutes, although the six-hour session probably took about 10-20 minutes to put together. I find it gets faster results than the party search feature, too.
