Ultima Thule is bad for your electric bill.

I recently noticed that my RTX2070 GPU performance is maxed out at 99-100% when just standing around in Ultima Thule, even when the camera is just pointed at the ground. This is observed in Windows Task Manager, Performance, GPU.

In Limsa, with about 30 players in view, the GPU load is only 50%.

I checked my UPS power display in both locations.
Limsa: 300 watts
UT : 360 watts.
Exit or minimize game: 123 watts
.
So, if your electric bills are a problem, don't AFK in UT. (Or don't AFK anywhere.)

but yeah, it's not really a surprise to me it makes your GPU pull more, since that was the area the launch bug that caused audio and video stuttering was the most pronounced.

won't your GPU running at 100% utilization take care of that though?

Borderless windowed, capped at 60 FPS, settings at Medium. Not sure what you mean? My card is definitely weaker: 1650 GTX on laptop. It used up even less (<10%) in Windowed. I don't have two monitors mind you, but I made sure to un-limit any usage when the client is inactive. If my test is flawed somehow though, I'm up to admit that.

Cap your framerate to your monitors refresh rate if you are concerned.

In high-density places like Limsa, your GPU gets bottlenecked by your CPU, which keeps it from rendering a bunch of superfluous frames and driving up the usage.

Well, Ultima thule was a lot of FX going on. Add that to the fact that Japanese developers are not the best one when it comes to work on PC platforms (there are a lot of examples) and this applies to FF XIV as well: in game design it is awesome, but on a technical side it is not that awesome, there are a lot of stuff that we are getting right now (plates on cities, for example) that should have been there a while ago.

And im not complaining, i love FF XIV and definitely prefer a good game in design (aka game loop) but bad on the technical side, than vice versa (any example of impressive tech games that are really empty once you pass the "wow" effect). And they will probably never fix it (or maybe yes in the next expansion with the game engine improvement), but a good performance and other basic stuff like a real character customization will just have to wait until the next FF Online game (XVII or XVIII).

technically... your GPU should always be running at 99 to 100%. this is how they are designed, if its not, you are not getting full utilization and have a bottleneck somewhere, typically in other hardware
