Advice Please - Invisible 'Barrier' during Boss Fights

Okay… I was hesitant to submit this query, but I’ve asked my friends and they either don’t know what I’m talking about or, if they do understand, don’t have an answer.

I'll explain this as best I can:
I have an issue – and always have – where I can’t get anywhere near bosses. I can’t enter their hitbox (if that’s what you call it) to get close to them. There is, for lack of a better way of describing it, an invisible ‘barrier’ that prevents me from entering the area inside the Red circle surrounding the boss:
    Example:

Again, the red circle surrounding Hephaistos (and I know it’s only a visual marker in itself) – I can’t enter the area inside. I did once wonder if it was a ‘Ranged DPS’ thing but the other Bard in the pictured team was able to get inside that area and close to Hephaistos. And this doesn’t only apply to Pandemonium 8th – I have the same problem with any boss. Azeyma is another problematic one – I always get KO’ed by her during the attack she uses which requires players to stand/run beneath her – I can’t do that since, as noted, there is a ‘barrier’ that prevents it.

Interestingly, I can enter that 'area' if another player pulls me into it.

Hope someone can identify what this might be as its really annoying and makes me look like a moron (and I don’t need much help with that!) and, try as I might, I haven’t been able to find a solution.

It's the lock-on feature, when you lock-on to a target, it stops you from moving inside the target ring, remove lock-on and you'll be able to go in just fine.

    Target lock.
    1. System menu.
    2. Character Configuration.
    3. Control Settings.
    4. Target tab.
    5. Uncheck "Automatically lock on target when initiating auto-attack."
    6. Apply.

In other news, there is no technical debt from 1.0.

Thank you both SO much - that worked, and solved an issue that's been bugging me for a long time!

    Much appreciated!

Is lock-on something separate to regular hard targeting? Does the inability to enter the ring only happen in combination with other settings? I've never known that to be a problem, and I would think more people would run into it (pun not intended) particularly while dodging donut AOEs.

Lock-on is a third layer of targeting that either applies automatically when you press the auto attack button or activate any offensive action that coerces auto attacks (see the setting Jeeqbit points out above) or manually if you press the lock-on keybind (default numpad5 I think) or use the /lockon command. It prevents you from entering the target's hit circle, and this is ostensibly to prevent you from going into and all the way through the target, which could potentially cause some unaesthetic or disorienting rapid reversals of the camera if you held Forward as you crossed the target's center, turned around, crossed the target's center, turned around.

In re: donuts, it's probably not so obviously an issue because the majority of donuts are larger than the target's circle, even when the animation appears to touch the circle or even slightly into it.

Either it works differently on controller or there's something more to it in the settings, because I can definitely lock onto an enemy and run into their target ring unobstructed.

I experience it and I use keyboard/mouse. The only thing I could imagine affect it except that is legacy.

No, the circular arrows are the auto attack indicator. The lockon indicator is a diamond-dot on the target's model:

I don't think I can do that on controller. What's the benefit of it?

All that happens when I activate auto-attack or do an auto-attack-triggering skill is that it gets the auto-attack marker.
