I get the joke. It has been hilarious. Trolling players like this has been a source of much amusement. But it is time.

Implement real tab targeting.

I understand this joke system that was designed to just mess with players has probably been hilarious to the dev team. "Oh hahaha they think we would make tab targeting this bad."

Just release the real tab targeting system please.

I mean you press tab and it targets the enemy, I genuinely don't know what more you want from it

I mainly use a macro that targets the nearest player when I do pvp so I've never had much of a problem there

The ability for it to cycle targets intuitively and reliably, as that's the intended and listed function of the button/action.

the intened function is the ability to cycle through the enemies. and it does. it starts from the enemy closest to you. if you target enemy nr. 4 it cycles further to enemy nr.5.
click on the ground to lose your target before using tab

Other tab targeting systems often have more sophisticated scripting that allows it not to be instantly jumbled up by targets switching positions left-right very briefly. XIV's doesn't, or at least not in so nearly polished a way, which it largely why it ends up notoriously bad for, say, melee moving about for positionals and/or during PvP.

Its cycling is neither quite intuitive, as it's not quite always a strafing or angular movement from the prior target, nor quite reliable.

Is that going to be an issue for a caster in PvE 95% of the time? No. But that's a millimeter high bar.



Now, if someone's annoyed that it isn't targeting the nearest enemy each time... that's why there's a separate "Target Nearest Enemy" button that we can keybind as we please. (Middle mouse, in my case, and more often used than Cycle Target when playing melee or in PvP.)

That's kind of the problem. I have to use a macro or else it'll decide to cycle through people far in the back instead of those close to me.

In WoW, pressing Tab will target the nearest player and then cycle through those closest to farthest. Not pressing Tab for a few seconds will reset it back to the closest next time you press it.
